Scratched Mirror

Discussion in 'Detailing and cleaning' started by Martin Newman, Aug 10, 2022.

  1. Hi , have some very fine scratches in my mirror, hardly noticeable but I know they are there, any recommendations for method and product to get rid

  2. @rob lewis

  3. I’d also be interested to know

  4. I have micro scratches in the glass of the mirrors on my 1260 Mutley, is this what you're referring to? Only really visible in direct sunlight rather than in the usual UK murk... I'd be interested to know if there's a solution for this issue too.

  5. Several options; replace the mirrors with new ones.

Have them recoated as in what astonomy community do with refractor telescopes; re-aluminizing (quite expensive & several different process now available).

Live with them & learn not to clean them with a foam block. Rince off with soapy water & a clean paint brush. After all we wash are hands with soap not to kill bacteria or viruses, but to literally remove dirt & debris from our skin.

ps: Is this apprioate time to discuss drinking ones own urine?

  6. Hi , Yes thats exactly what I mean , believe there must be a detailers knowledge out there that will guide us to the right product/method.

  7. I have a prism with a very flat surface. Combined with toothpaste, this removed a fine scratch from a secondary mirror on my old telescope yrs ago. As advised by a knowledgable guy. Ye, I was surprised too.

  12. Thanks :upyeah:

Just looked this up; white with baking powder rather than the gloopy striped or plain gel type apparently.

You can be the Guinea pig Martin, let us know how it goes:D

  15. The scratches will be on the front of the glass, and the reflective coating is on the back, so doubt this would be effective even if it was free.

  17. I’ll probably replace my mirror unit, as I managed to scratch the back of it riding under a chain link fence in Italy. Coupled with the scratches on the glass from the catch on my helmet, it looks a right mess anyway!

  18. Hi all, gave this a go and to be honest I can't see any difference, scratches look exactly the same as before, I'll keep searching for a solution

  20. PolyWatch.... Watch guys use it to remove scratches in the plastic "crystal". Speedmasters that have Haselite instead of glass, are prone to scratches. I've used it to remove a fairly significant scratch that all-of-a-sudden appeared from nowhere on one of mine, worked brilliantly. I'm sure it works similarly to toothpaste, albeit a little more predictably (Colgate vs Aquafresh vs blue gel type vs teeth whitening!!)

    Polywatch available from Amazon btw
