Looking at an Almax security chain and due to their size i'm wondering if people are putting the chain through the rear wheel rather than the frame. I have an 848 and it looks like it will be a very tight fit getting even the 16mm chain through the frame on the left side. The owner of Almax has recommended using the bigger chains 22-25mm and to put through the rear wheel so looking for views on this as not going to be as secure as through the frame.. Thanks
Use a Pragmasis Anti Pinch Pin through the rear axle if you're going to run the chain through a ground anchor or similar. You need a specific Squire lock to go with it but it's a good solution and tough as Thatcher.
It's a shame society has broken down that we have to used these unnecessary heavy things today, as a right pain in the arse, no bigger than 19mm chain size in my opinion through the rear wheel because no one can remove the rear wheel nut in a hurry with a spanner unless their name's Popeye of course.
It's about making things more difficult for low-lifes I guess. I don't bother when I'm out and about but my bike lives in a very-nearby friend's garage and I'm not taking chances....
And I agree we shouldn't have to do this but people have been nicking bikes since forever but now they're worth a lot more.
Thanks, they have offered me a good deal on a 19mm or 22mm with squire lock both will have to go through the rear wheel as too big for the frame. I have a smaller chain already through the frame and into a ground anchor. Its a shame we have to be so worried about loosing something we have worked hard to pay for...
Well there's NO fecking way i'm having a ships anchor swinging around my neck when travelling on a motorcycle.
I just don't like carry anything that adds weight to the bike, including emergency tool kits......that's the kiss of death statement form now on for me.
agree I wont carry a chain. if it dont fit under the seat cowl its not coming, that said a few times i have a back pack on with a camera in it. If i break down its going to be an AA job According to there website its not suitable for the 848 rear axle as it narrows : /
I recently bought a 19mm Almax chain and lock to replace the 13mm I had been using I would have gone for a 22mm at the time but it wouldn’t fit through the ground anchors I have and I didn’t fancy breaking up the concrete to change them. As it turns out the 19mm chain was a touch too short to go through the frame like I was doing with the 13mm so had to re think things and I ended up buying the Anti pinch pin from pragmasis. Same thoughts as everyone else it’s ok for home not something you can carry around. edit just had a quick look on their website pinch pin isn’t suitable for the 848 never mind
Thanks yeah just looked myself and sadly no good for the 848 axle, it might go through the frame though but it would then be vulnerable to attack. Think the 22mm chain through the wheel and ground anchor along with my other smaller chain through the frame is my best bet
I used a 19mm Almax chain through the rear wheel of my s4r, bear in mind that the chain is VERY heavy and will scratch your rear wheel at every opportunity, despite the chain having a fabric sleeve, I ended up using a HUGE piece of soft foam pipe insulation to protect the rear wheel, Almax chains give you a very good night's sleep ;-)
I live in East Yorkshire, garage is belled and cctvd , I became a tad paranoid however if the scrotes want a Panigale v4s and would like to drop the clutch then happy days,I’ll read about them in the local rag
So it sounds like the Almax 16mm chain will fit through an 848 frame, so my choice now is the 16mm through the frame or the 22mm through the rear wheel, bikes kept in a garage with a big van parked in front of the door in a rural village. I could get both chains I guess, what worries me about the rear wheel is its very easy and quick to remove and the the pinch pin system wont fit the 848..
