I recall walking over the fields towards East Fortune races and arriving as the first 50 cc race started - WOW the sound and the smell of those strokers! Great day 80's Embra!
Meh. Silkoline smelt better. My 25:1 lammie ensured you stank of it right to the core. Castrol R? The equivalent of Old Spice or Hi Karate. Us heat seizers preferred Silko.
I’ve worked with a few solvent abuse clients over the years so feel I can offer the help you guys so desperately need, and I am willing to offer Ducati Forum members mates rates.
Castrol R early autumn mornings in the 80's with the staccato sound from the Microns was a special time. But Oulton Park for the Transatlantic Trophy with the 500s pumping out bluestroke was the time to savour the special scent.
The teenager's Mito runs on Castol 2 stroke, they don't make R anymore but we use the next best thing. The guy I used to race for ran his 50s on Castrol R mixed with race fuel and av-gas (usually sloshing it around in his caravan awning with cigarette burning merrily away in his mouth!) Happy, smelly days. That, and motorbikes after a hard, fast ride, a heady mixture of hot oil, warm tyres and the exhaust while it gently pings to itself... lush. And then I wonder why my lungs are stuffed
A747 was/is the synthetic replacement to "R" Used it in the TZ's and RG back in the '80's club racing days. Still available now as far as I know.
They do still make Castrol R. My mates Gilera 175 extra rossa (four stroke) was filled with it, so short of stripping the engine and thoroughly cleaning it, he has to keep using it. He bought some and changed the oil last month. The bike runs beautifully on it. Following him there is a lovely faint whiff of it, though nothing like the 2 strokes as his engine doesn't burn much oil.
any 2 stroke smells amazing as long as it's jetted so that the oil is burning. They smell rubbish when they are just chucking it cold out the back. I remember getting the RS250 and my RGV to run just well enough that on the pipe it had that beautiful smell, obviously it lasted about 5 mins as is always the way with 2 Strokes.
Yep, my first bike was an old Ariel Leader and having replaced the standard exhausts with expansion chambers then ran it on 20:1 Castro R. The aroma was unbelievable.
