Hiya everyone just had my bike serviced. Went out on it yesterday no probs with engine or temperatures etc on ride. Got home left bike for a few mins cooling down and a coolant leak appeared front to mid belly pan right by the expansion tank drain hose. The coolant was not hot. Took thecside off and found the expansion tank had a smidgen of coolant left in it but the radiator was full with coolant. So to identify the fault I refilled the expansion tank and ran the bike on idle to 104 degrees and no coolant leak happened. Rode it today and all was good no issues with cooling , engine oil all ok etc. So my question is why did it happen ? if the dealer overfilled the tank then it would not empty to nothing.could it have been the radiator thermostat cap not working correctly as i took it off and checked the spring mechanism. Any ideas guys as the problem seems to have gone for now but will it come back ? Cheers.
I actually had similar happen on mine. Changed the coolant in winter, workshop manual says to run the bike to 110 degrees which helps to bring up any trapped air to the top and then check the level after. It was so cold the day I did it I couldn't get the temp past 104 as the fan would kick in and bring it back down. Jump to later this year and after a warm ride on a warm day, had the same as you and a load of coolant dump on the drive when I turned the bike off, all from the breather tube from the expansion tank. Refilled the coolant, placed some cardboard in front of the rad to block the fan drawing in too much cold air, ran it to 110 degrees and no probs since
Nice to know I'm not going mad and it's happened to someone else. Cheers for the reply m8. I wont worry so much as you said hopefully its righted itself.
Does this work for the Panigale R (gen 2) also? Mine ejected coolant after standing inside last winter, and I got my local dealer to renew the coolant. Now it runs *extremely* hot even in steady traffic at 45-50 mph (104 degrees) only cooling down when I get it up to a higher speed in clear air. Once I get it home and stored, it’s spat out some coolant again. I haven’t yet found where the coolant is coming from, but think it’s from the expansion tank overflow. Dealer suggests the water pump would need replacing! I’m going to have another look (fairing off) today, and try the top up/run up to 104/recheck procedure, but any info or advice would be appreciated.
This is the section from the workshop manual that states about running to 110c, I assume it's the same process for the R
Thanks Chris Does the manual say I need to leave the radiator cap open, as the image is pointing to it? Would the engine reach 110 with it off (boiling)?
Just removed the fairing and found the expansion tank empty again. Next: acquire some red coolant, refill acc. to instructions, start up and watch. Thanks Chris.
