Ducati 899 Bike is new to me on a 2015, been perfectly fine for 2 weeks and now won't start, checker the starter solenoid fuse and that's fine, all other electrics work but just won't fire up? Press the starter and it just clicks, battery is holding charge just fine, worried it could be a faulty starter motor? If I hold the button down long enough the fan starts to kick in also Thanks for the help!
I’d also try another battery or check with a multi metre what the voltage does when you press the start button, I’ve seen seemingly good batteries take a nose dive when you try to start up.
I’ve never had one fail but I may have been lucky, you can test the solenoid though. When you say the voltage only drops by a few volts when you press the start button what’s the start voltage and then the voltage while starter pressed? If it’s say 12v and then drops to 10v when starting then the battery is buggered.
14.1v are you sure? A good condition battery might show 13v tops but one showing 14.1v is a new one on me. Have you got a charger connected to it whilst testing it by any chance?
Sorry yes it was hooked to the trickle charger at the time also it appears to be intermittent... The bike started fine after push starting it.... Will check in the morning if it starts
Do the same test without it being hooked up to the charger. ie hook it up the the multimeter, then what’s the V before the start button is pressed and what’s it drop too when the start button is pressed? If it falls to 10.5v or lower there’s not enough power for all the systems (starter, coils, ecu etc), and that’s your problem - could be new battery time.
When you push start it the starter motor is not sucking the life out of the battery so the power therein is fully available for the coils and ecu. My money’s on your battery being past it’s usefulness.
Try jumper leads off a car. You can try shorting across the solenoid with a large screw driver with the ignition on, if the bike turns over/starts you know its that.
Do you know if it's the original battery, it'll be 7 years old if it is? I've seen similar, dash fires up, but nothing when you click the starter. Can you hear the fuel pump prime? My first guess would be battery, cheap fix and you probably need one given the age anyway.
So I need to go and get a multi meter but in the meantime I bybassed the solenoid by using a screwdriver on the contacts, bike fired up perfectly
