I just paint on a bit of bog cleaner (the harpic super strength stuff) with a brush, leave for a minute, and rinse off to get them back to silver..
The best off the shelf exhaust cleaner I have used is Dr Downpipe, amazing results even on really old classic bikes, I only really own retro stuff nowadays, I use it in the showroom at work too, similar to the Harpic which I used in the past but seems to be better and easier!
