Hi there, total noob here and first post. Looking for some pointers. I have long harboured a desire to own a Ducati, and this caught my eye, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/22512998...3HVbQFpRYm&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY I know less than nothing about Ducatis, (apart from loving them) and even though I certainly don’t plan on riding this in the short term. (I know I know!) what are your thoughts on this. I just want this (or something like it) for the joy of owning it, but if at some point I wanted to move it on, is there anything that would make a buyer run a mile. It looks a stunner to me but I appreciate there could be problems lurking behind all that. Honest opinions greatly appreciated. Thanks
it's heavily modified which won't please the purists/old people when you come to sell it (and personally I think it looks a bit of a dogs dinner but that's subjective), if you're after something to display and look at and hope to get your money back/make a profit when you sell it on then this isn't the one, you'd be better off looking for a very clean, original, much more standard bike.
Thanks very much for your opinion. Would those modifications affect insurance? Also I noted there are no front indicators/mirrors, is that road legal? Thanks again
Looks very nice. One to ride and enjoy, and sit and look at. But not expect to make you money in the future.
Thanks for that. I certainly don’t have any expectation at all of making money. Just want to make sure that it wouldn’t be unsaleable for whatever reason. I loose money on most things I touch, so I’m not expecting Ducati ownership to buck that trend!
As Bradders says one to look at but certainly not after dusk, 748 headlights were shit, reducing them by 50% will make them 50% more shitter.
If it looks good to you and you only plan to have it as garage art, then go for it. For riding it... no where on the item description does it say that the rockers have been checked. These are parts of the desmo valvetrain and in this era had a thin chrome coating that could (and often did) flake, eventually damaging the cam itself. In short, if you want to ride them they need regular maintenance. Fortunately, they're easy to work on, parts are readily available, and there is a wealth of resources online to help you.
As most have already pointed out, it’s not one for the purists and will never make top dollar if/when you sell. Ultimately though it doesn’t matter two shits what anyone thinks apart from you. If you like it , buy it, ride it and enjoy it . I’ve got a bastardised 996 with carbon everything, the wrong graphics and about as far from pure as you could get. I buy bikes that I like and others opinion on them mean zero , I don’t buy bikes to please the masses, just me. It has quite a few mods so be aware when insuring it that you will have a small list to rattle off which may make it very expensive depending on your bike history and NCB situation. I will echo the comment about dreadful headlights at night so with one missing/covered, don’t even think of riding this bike anytime after dusk, you will be riding blind !! Good luck on your search and hope you snag one soon
It seems to have a service record and invoices, so a good start. It looks clean and well cared for, so may be trouble free at that quite high mileage, but just check most recent belt change, oil and filters. It also has some very expensive extras, but this is where my interest would decline as collectively they look awful. So probably a good underlying machine, but clothed like a fashion victim. If your intention is to own first, ride later, you could spend that time carefully curating a better overall look. Those rearsets would be my first choice for removal. Slingy is right about single headlights. I almost ended up in the ditch a couple of nights ago
Appreciate all the replies guys. Much food for thought. Is it legal to have no mirrors or front indicators? I’m guessing insurers wouldnt like a lot of it, including the one headlight?
I am trying to import a race bike and obtain a V5. For this I need to obtain a NOVA, but more importantly an MOT as well. The bike has no lights, brake lights, horn, mirrors or indicators. I have been told I just need to fit a horn to the left handlebar and I will be given a day time MOT.
For the usual mot you don’t need mirrors but anything manufactured after 1986 (might be 1985 I can’t be sure) needs indicators. Daytime only mot just needs a horn.
True, but if they (and the brake lights, normal lights, reflector) are not there, they cannot be checked. As I said earlier, the only item you must have is a horn.
