Best place for selling bikes

  1. Have done ebay but you do get lots of messers and can be failry costly
Forums are ok shop window but peolpe have to look rather than stumble accross something so limits audiance a tad
Biketrader means upfront sales cost but does it still work
Gumtree seems to equal scams and fuckwits as well as cheper end of market
Dealer maybe an option but could take more time and obviously you have ipside of ability o fund thru delaer and downside of potentially large fees

So, to those that have recently, where best to sell it?

  2. Bikes and cars I use Biketrader and autotrader. Always works for me as long as you are not too greedy after all everyone wants a good deal. That said my tiger 800 ended up being part exd. I put that down to the weather in March being shite though! Good luck with whatever you decide to do :upyeah:

  3. Put it outside your house with a "For Sale" sign, it'll be gone in no time! :upyeah:

  4. I've always done OK with placing a classified on eBay. With a classified, there's no final selling fee (which is what bumps the price up, that and Paypal), just a flat listing fee and it stays on there for a month.

I sold a Lambretta on there with a traditional auction about 3 years back, and got £500 more than it was worth. It can be hit and miss.

My logic is that it costs about the same as everywhere else but probably has the biggest audience. How many people on here have been looking for a bike, parts, clothing and looked at eBay, I know I do.

  5. Yep, eBay as a classified over autotrader for me.

ive sold two relatively high price bikes this year and one only just last week, both times I listed on autotrader and on eBay and the latter got the most interest, offers and ultimately the final sales.

again don't be too greedy and price it to sell (but add £100-£200) above your bare minimum as thats your haggle allowance.

take loads of pictures, nice clean clear examples. Add details about receipts, tyres, servicing, type of oil used, type of cleaning products, anything that's over and above which shows you take good care of your bikes.

Take your time, pic the best photos out of 50 you take, you need say 12 great ones, just takes loads in different light, then go through them weening it down to the final 12.

ive been perusing eBay recently just checking the market on a couple of bikes recently and I find it gobsmacking that some people offer a bike for sale even with low mileage and they couldn't even be arsed to wash it and polish it before selling. They post up shit blurry photos almost as though they've rushed it.

if the previous owner can't be bothered to do that then its not likely to have been pampered before, so I wouldn't want it personally.

selling a bike well is like an Artform to a degree, you price it right, you present it better than all the others listed and you be patient.

  6. supply and demand.....

  7. Cheers sounds like ebay classified a good option, never used it always done auction. I'll have a look

  8. I've sold 4 bikes on ebay in the last 12 months, I wouldn't advertise anywhere else.

As damodici says take your time and put some really good photo's on there, it really helps, and just make your ad attractive with clear, bold lettering etc, you can do all that on ebay.

It also attracts buyers from Europe, which I've sold bikes to but the exchange rates aren't quite so attractive so less interest these days.

    Good luck.

  9. e-bay would get my recommendation as well. Just sold an Aprilia Tuono this week, 5 days into a 28 day classified ad. Loads of interest as well, had two people racing to get over to see it in the end. Bloke gave me full asking as well.

By contrast, I also put it in Autotrader. Expensive by comparision to e-bay and generated no real interest. Made the mistake of including my e-mail. Out of 6 messsages, 5 were attempted scams...be warned.

  10. That's all sound advice, I do all of that.

You get 12 pics, use them. It's woth paying the extra £1 or so to supersize them. I'm amazed, like damodici say at the ammount of people who will put 4 tiny blurred photographs on an advert.

Clean the bike, take pictures of the bike at all angles plus and original / aftermarket parts you have going with the bike, all the receipts and books etc.

Even choose an attractive background. I've lost count of the ammount of bikes I've see pictured that look like they are sitting in a scrap yard. I sold a GSXR1100 recently on an eBay classified. They guy came to see mine over the other half a dozen as it looked the best presented in the advert.

Oh, I always place ad's on forums too. It costs nothing except a little time. I sold an Aprillia Tuono Factoy on the Tuono forum a couple of years back and got the full price for it.

  11. just the 40 or so 848 on ebay for sale.......

  12. Yes but if you look, the majority are dealer bikes priced accordingly. Also I've found that most people won't travel more than say 100 miles to look at a bike. Look again and see how many private sales there are that are close to you, then follow the advice given above and you'll have no problems selling it.

  13. i would travel the length of the country to get the right bike rather than be restricted to something just because it was local....

  14. ...but many won't

  15. And get someone else with a van or trailer to drive it about

  16. Agreed Andy. I bought my 1098s from Lowestoft, from Newcastle that was close to a 600 mile round trip. but like you say, it was the right bike. The way I look at it, it's only a day out of your life. Do as much homework as you can with the owner on the phone, it's a long way to go to be dissapointed.

  17. Travelled from Kent to Edinburgh to buy a bike.

  18. But they aren't common as piss 848s I bet, more like some old factory-backed RS or something...

I bought my old DR shitter for £820 from Blackpool, 600 miles round trip. But some wont travel 50 miles.

  19. 'twas a Monnie S4 for £1K

  20. Not surprised then, sounds a bargain worth travelling for
