1098 Electrics

  1. Hello all

    just before I was due to exit the Folkestone side of passport control yesterday, recently acquired 1098 wouldn't start.. turned out the battery wasn't retaining charge and the mechanic on site, (a Gld Wing biker), said it was probably the rectifier. So trip off, managed to limp home as no local dealers had stock; is this just bad luck or start of money pit exercise; previously had 999 and no issues.. Advice appreciated.

  2. This is a fairly common fault - I have had it on 748, 749 and 1098.

    You would be best to fit a MOSFET rectifier with a plug and play Triumph sub loom.
    Search for Shindengen FH020AA Rectifier.

    I will dig out my post from a few years back.

  3. not the first to come up with this solution but here's my adaptor plate for fitting in place of original unit:-

    (bit of added "heatsink" aspect also).

  5. yes, had to for csk depth, but heatsink bit also intended as will still "cook" in extreme circs.

  6. The second "cheaper" option is definitely not an original Shindengen FH020AA but rather a cheap Chinese copy. One telltale is the lack of a stainless steel backing plate.

  7. Don't risk Chinese. The first one I got was from a german company who raced R1's. I paid £60 thinking it would be a upmarket chinese copy. It had a stainless back maybe was up market but it lasted less than a thousand miles.
    I got a 2nd hand genuine Shindengen from a guy on E Bay. No trouble since. I got a second one off him for the 748.
    I would rather get a 2nd hand one or pay through the nose for a genuine one than risk a Chinese copy
     
  8. agree, many of us on here have worked out that they (Shindengen FH***) are pretty much bullet-proof, have bought and fitted several s/h myself.
