(small) Bike Things You've Done Today

  1. Test fitted the new to me Tamburini Factory alloy 21 Ltre tank to make sure it fitted right before getting it wrapped / painted. Fits great and sat on the bike, the width makes it easier to grip.

  3. What about when you're riding at night, your rear light fails and you don't realise? How about when your bike is parked on a road at night?

    Its a pretty sensible law.

  4. So, after adding all these new trick bits, thought it about time I started removing stuff not needed as all the Euro 5 crap has been turned off at the ecu. First on the list and well overdue is the Evap canister and it’s purge valve. Job made even easier as there’s only one tube to cap off now as the new tank hasn’t got the little overflow or breather tubes on the bottom.
Next on the list are the Lambda sensor and secondary air flow cables and tubes.

  7. Those are very rare scenarios. But if having a reflector gives you peace of mind, then go for it.

  9. Well if you tour/ holiday with your bike, its possibly parked outside pretty often. Electrical failures on Ducatis is not a rare thing either.

I'm not sure whether there is fine for not displaying a rear reflector, I do know its a legal requirement. I think the police can issue a rectification notice for a minor fault on your bike, but if there are 3 defects I think it becomes a bigger issue. So loud pipes, small plate and no rear reflector...

    4. Lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment
Headlamp, position lamps, stop lamps, direction indicators, rear registration plate lamp, rear reflector and direction indicator ‘tell-tale’ rules and inspection for motorcycle MOT tests.

    4.8. Rear reflectors

    4.8.1. Presence, condition and operation
You must only inspect the one mandatory rear reflector on a solo machine, or 2 on a motorcycle combination.

Motorcycles must have one red reflector aligned to the longitudinal centre line and positioned to reflect squarely to the rear. On motorcycle and sidecar, the sidecar must also have a reflector fitted towards the outer side and positioned to reflect squarely to the rear.

Rear reflectors are not needed on motorcycles that:

do not have front and rear position lamps fitted
have such lamps permanently disconnected, painted over or masked
Reflective tape is not an acceptable substitute for a rear reflector.

    Defect Category
    (a) Reflector defective or damaged:

    (i) by up to 50% of the reflecting surface
(ii) by more than 50% of the reflecting surface

    Minor
    Major
    (b) Reflector:

    (i) not securely attached
    (ii) likely to become detached

    Minor
    Major
    4.8.2. Compliance with requirements
You must inspect mandatory rear reflectors.

Motorcycles must have one red reflector aligned to the longitudinal centre line and positioned to reflect squarely to the rear. On motorcycle and sidecar, the sidecar must have a reflector fitted towards the outer side and positioned to reflect squarely to the rear.

Rear reflectors are not needed on motorcycles without front and rear position lamps or have such lamps permanently disconnected, painted over or masked.

Reflective tape is not an acceptable substitute for a rear reflector.

    Defect Category
    (a) Reflector:

    (i) colour or position not in accordance with the requirements
(ii) missing or reflecting white to the rear

  11. Unlucky! If you had parked outside my place you could have had it rinsed off for free (in rain water).

  12. it's already damp Jez.. that's the problem as we head into Autumn/Winter.. bike is "pickling away" under the cover unnoticed. It's my all-weather bike so doesn't live in a Garage and i'm not using it as much as usual so doesn't get to "dry out" so much. Looking at increasing surface corrosion I might try and make some space.

  13. Which bike is it?

  14. It’s the silver ugly used to be owned by Jerry XT on here, about 10,000 miles, will be punting it out soon as it seems my miles are dropping now on a motorbike.

  15. Great! You will then be free to roar around on the 1098!

  16. Another purchase of screws, plugs, rubbers etc sent to Snells for bits that have rattled off sent today. :D

The most annoying the plugs on inside of both side panels right at front that you access above rad (1299). TBF, the rubbers are the mirror ones between fairing support and front fairing for mirrors, they fucked off somewhere and will be found as soon as new ones arrive.

At least the fairings went on easier yesterday. Some days those goddamned tangs at top refuse to locate and hold the plastic trim.

2xUSB socket fitted to power my iphone and recharge my dildo on a quadlock mounted ram ball to centre yoke. 5V transformed supply and fused. Oh and waterproofed.

Pain to find a place to locate it. Ended up mounting it to rear of lhs front fork via velcro (to act as a soft buffer) and a zip tie for now. This means it doesnt foul when on full lock.

  17. Someone could do an anorak thread to list the most popular “vibrate off “ fixings for each model. It’s the rear heat guard fixing on an ugly Strada, down by your foot, and on 1098R it’s the fixings for the rear subframe undertray, two in particular, have replaced twice now but reluctant to Loctite. Also one of the rear bellypan fixings, but did Loctite this one.

  18. Its those rubber grommets that the fairing tangs of the 1299 slide into on the plastic electrical side bits that do me in. They invariably, despite greasing, get popped off. Its an idiotic design. Ive had to order another 4 as 1 has vanished and the other 3 have mishapen and split.

  20. TBF, my assorted bits n bobs came in at £17 posted for WM Snell.

I may lightly soft glue the rubbers in place to stop them wandering.
