Not used my 900SS for a while but always managed to start her up and let her run etc. Went for a short blast last week with a view of getting her through the MOT. Started up fine, idling fine, ran ok up the road BUT when it got warm and up to temp it started to splutter and idle erratically. Fuel is good and new, FCR's were drained when off the road, plugs are newish!! Any ideas?
Maybe the tank breather is blocked, try cracking open the filler when it starts spluttering Also check out the fuel feed and return pipelines inside the tank they’re prone to splitting and reducing fuel pressure Do you have the original carbs to try ?
How long is a while? It will be something very simple. Is it now running rough from cold at every start up? Or is it following the same pattern of ok cold, rough when hot?
If it was a car.. the type with Carbs from the 80's - then likely there is a diaphram split on the needle or the enritchment pump - feeding too much fuel. I am not familiar with your carbs - so could be talking crap.... but worth a check.
It could be a number of things. Could be ignition too, pick up coils or ignition coils for example, hut the fact its been laid up a while suggests fuelling. My thoughts on the fuel filter ate that you may be getting fuel starvation if its partially blocked. Fuel without stabiliser goes like varnish over time. I'd change it anyway. It could be something else though. But it needs done
Thanks for the replys. It's not the the tank breather as checked that, my carbs were sent away, stripped and rebuilt by Matt at Harpers not so long ago so don't think its them as was running ok when initially fitting. At the same time I stripped the petrol tank and fitted new filters there, checked the hoses etc, having said this fuel could be a possibility though!! The wieird thing is it's only running rough when the engine gets hot i.e mid run, cold starting is ok and idle when cold is ok, coils are again newish, ignition pick up coils are not though (originals) so could be an issue there. I also wondered if there could be a split in the intake rubbers causing an air leak so going to pull all apart at the weekend and have a look.
Nope, no FCR's have a choke as far as i am aware, just a few twists of the throttle to prime and then she fires up. There is an idle adjustment but i tend to leave that alone.
I haven't heard of FCRs having a choke lesrn something new everyday. Mine don't either. I hope you have success in your quest, so filter was done, something else to check is the coils. Found this link, dunno if it will help. https://www.badasscars.com/index.cf...ct_id=289/category_id=59/mode=prod/prd289.htm
Hmm interesting read that, think i will check the coils again although they are almost new, maybe a faulty one, cheers though.
I had a running issue that caused me a lot of head scratching. Thought it was fuelling but turned out to be a faulty new CA Cycleworks coil. Replaced without issue and ran great afterwards.
Solved it...was the plugs, was running some Denso plugs, swapped back to some NGK's ans she pulls like a train, did check the coils and pickups and all were in spec and ok. Had forgotten how good the midrange pull on the FCR's is!!
