Ducati 1098

Discussion in 'Builds & Projects' started by drummertjp, Jul 27, 2013.

  1. Hello everyone,

Its been a while since I have used this forum, I am looking for advice on my ducati 1098. I had an accident on it 18 months back and it was a CAT C write off, I have spent time replacing everything on it to get it road ready. I finally booked it in for a mechanic to look over it and hopefully give it the ok, however he told me the front and rear wheels are out of line by 10mm and the front fork was slightly mis aligned. This was obviously a result of the accident but he had them as advisories on MOT and not a fail. The clutch is slipping however which means it wouldnt pass MOT.

So my question is really has anyone any experience with these bikes after an off like this and does the slight mis alignment matter much? And what is likely to be wrong with the clutch?

Finally what would be the best way of selling a bike like this if I decide not to keep it.

    Many thanks in Advance

    tim

  2. Not being funny, but I think the wheels being out of alignment by 10mm is more than a "slight mis-alignment"

I persoanlly would feel very uneasy about selling that bike to anybody if it were mine. I'd be breaking it, getting the frame re-aligned professionally or buying a second hand frame.

  3. Bent the crap out of a zx6r track bike a couple of months ago. Wheels, discs, forks and frame all bent. Took it to a company who jig frames and he did all of it and it's back to a1 condition. Never again will I replace stuff with new before I've taken it to this guy. He'd done a 1098 that was well and truly bent two weeks before mine and said it went back really easy. No way on this earth would I ride a bent bike though, could all end in a nasty tank slapper! Plenty if jig company's out there for bikes. The one I used was near Grantham.

  4. Yes thanks, I think I will look into cost of putting it on a jig, I was very surprised that he didn't say it was not road worthy with this mis alignment it was only an advisory on MOT! The 1098 felt twitchy enough without anything being mis aligned!

  5. was the frame damage and or fork damage on the write off list....

  6. Bit far gone now if it wasn't. Being 18mths ago. Frame is usually a complete write off if they'd picked it up. They made a balls if my last claim when some old gipper drive into my parked bike and knocked it over. Went over it with a fine tooth comb when I got it back only to discover the shock was leaking.... What a battle I had to get that replaced! Did it in the end though but that was straight after.

  7. How can a slipping clutch be a MOT fail? Tester is talking bollox.

  8. My thoughts exactly. They don't road test during an a MOT

  9. Is the frame actually bent,ie visual,if not my money would be on the fork clamps, you say the forks are mis aligned so how would the situation improve if they were straight, also how did he check the alignment?,I had a 848 cat d,one of the first things i did was had it checked for true by means of laser's and it fell well in tolerance but i remember being amazed how much tolerance there was in front to rear wheel alignment, cant remember how much but it was a few mm.

  10. Couldn't tell mine was visually. Thought it was just my forks but wasn't. Best to get it measured up as I went down the replace this & that route with mine and it ended costing me more in the long run. Sent you the link you asked for to the bloke I used.
