I did the toughest pass in lakes 2up on my old 1100 katana. Not sure what it was called. Felt like I was taking off at times I was that vertical.
I remember sometime in the late 70s seeing a couple fall off a scooter that stalled in front of us on one of those passes. Seeing as we were in a fvcking Reliant Regal van, it was very much a case of “there but for the grace of God, go I” though.
Hairy roads eh? Trouble I had was there’s fek all weight over the rear axle on a Vito. The wheels were spinning up and I was losing momentum. If I’d stopped there’s no way I’d have got going again. Wife made me pull over for a breather when we got to the top * fekin twatnav…
Hardknot is the toughest to cycle from either side , Wrynose is a close second. It’s 33% and steeper in places particularly the bends. It can catch a few out, I’ve driven up in my Brothers old 4x4 pick up truck in 2 WD mode it more bounced up than drove TBF. I’ve cycled up it a few times and it’s tough, fair play getting up it on a 2 up heavy assed motorcycle.
Hardknot is much the tougher pass even if it’s lower in height, been up both a few times. Although the weather doesn’t exactly sound great Z.

Toughest cycle climb I ever did (twice) was Wynetts Pass near Castleton in the Peak District. Not a million miles long but very, very tough. Had to cheat a bit by zig zagging
I inadvertently went up Hardnot Pass in my 330Ci about 10 years ago by mistake (following the Satnav heading to Wasdale to camp). Didn't think I was going to make it a couple of times, especially as it turns into a streamin a few places when it's p*ssing it down. Did Applecross in 2016 on the bike, that was interesting.

I was crapping myself thinking I may meet one of those coming the other way. The Bimmers 2wd, managed the job well though, don't think it would have done if it was the deisel version
Not done Wynette Pass, I avoid the Peak District whether on motorcycle or cycle. There’s a nice short sharp climb in Hebdon Bridge that you can cycle up, cobbled and so steep it has a handrail for them there pedestrians.
I encountered a few cyclists but luckily the timing was good and there was no danger of me skittling them. Met an oncoming RS6 when I got to the top. He'd have managed a lot better than me....

Exactly. Here in the UK we can't have climb categories because we don't have the continuity and elevation. But by Christ, we have the gradients! When we hosted a few stages of the TdF a few years back, some cyclists complained about the severity of the climbs around the Sheffield region. The puffs....
