It's not such a daft idea, I have a 1m x 1.5m piece that I use on the deck of my boat when carrying stuff at sea or loading the boat as a camping trailer when going on holiday. It's soft, so protects anything you put on it, but doesn't absorb or hold on to water being made of plastic. Water actually passes right through it. So in both respects it's better than a piece of old carpet.
That's exactly what i've in my Land rover, i was considering a rubber load liner at what around £190 plus and toss away the old carpet.
You can buy a 'Rug' sized piece from B&Q for not a lot of money. Might be worth a trip to your local store to see what you think.
