In England alone, the annual social cost of urban road noise was estimated to be £7–£10 billion in 2010. This is the total economic cost of exposure to noise pollution including lost productivity from sleep disturbance and health costs from heart attacks, strokes and dementia. Bloody heck!
You can always rely on someone to roll out statistics to make their case appear more dramatic. The police already have the legal powers to put a stop to a significant proportion of the perpetrators referred to, they don’t have the manpower or so it would often seem, the inclination or will power to do anything about it. The courts are either hamstrung by the guidance they are constrained by or an have an absence of willingness to actually give penalties that will hurt. Seize and scrap the vehicles, regardless of their (or their daddy’s) social or financial position. Andy
When I am out running, being in an area away from road traffic makes it much easier from my experience. The noise from busy roads definitely increases the stresses involved when pushing the heart.
Back in the day (20+ yrs) there was a trading estate we used to frequent, a long wide road with a big roundabout at each end. It was very popular, 3rd-4th gear wheelies, knee down around the roundabout and repeat. Then the drifters cottoned on to it as well. It was out of town but the noise carried. The police would turn up from time to time after noise complaints but they were pretty powerless to do anything. Until these signs turned up. Pretty much killed it overnight. had an additional sign underneath “except for access”
Surely to get an effective prosecution these noise cameras will have be calibrated and have certification to prove it Also, in Scotland there must be corroborative evidence, like the lines on the road at fixed speed cameras, and average speed cameras appear to have 2 cameras at each location, presumably 2 systems corroborating each other. How can they corroborate a noise camera? 2 systems side by side or in the same housing?
Good article and mostly mirrors my own observations. I hear the occasional loud bike, but they mostly come and go. The modified car exhausts are far louder and the owners will go around and around a given 'circuit' or up and down a bypass. The local car meets have all but been abolished here due to this sort of carry on. Add to that drifting and the drivers inability to use a waste bin for their McNuggies wrappers, results in a lot of pissed off people. It's a shame for the majority who go to the car meets. It was the same when I used attend bike meets, all it took was one bellend stunt monkey and that was the end of that!
Where I live is pretty rife with this shit. Surly if you're enjoyment can be noticed by someone in their own home. Something is wrong.
