Oil From Exhaust Weep Hole?

  1. Just started the bike up and noticed that oil was dripping from the L/H exhaust weep hole.
It stopped then when I took the reves upto 2000rpm it started again.

    Anyone with any ideas?

Had bike since 2016 and never had this before - it doesn't get much use so has been standing so I expect some oil to be burnt on startup bit not dripping out

  2. I'm not sure what age model this is for, or what exactly the exhaust weep hole is, but I can say that I had oil weeping from the exhaust header port on a bevel which was cured by a rebore and new piston & rings.

So, I wonder if it is possible for rings to 'gum up' or bores to glaze when the motor hasn't been used for some time.

  3. Are you certain it’s oil? I suspect it is only condensation (water) mixed with carbon from the exhaust internals, as such nothing to worry about.

  5. Hadn't thought of that. It definitely looks like oil & sits on the floor like oil rather than spreading and soaking in. I'll have to have a closer look.

  6. It's definitely oil - only seems to happen if bike is being revved over 2000rpm but that might just be the oil is getting pushed up the exhaust more.
Wondering if a compression test will tell me anything rather than stripping heads and barrels.

  7. That's a good idea as it's easy to do and non invasive. In my case the compression test didn't show a particulary bad reading but it was less than the front pot - don't quote me on this but I recall reading summat like 180 & 150 or so.

I also squirted a little oil through the spark plug hole & the subsequent reading was much improved.

And remember the throttle has to be wide open when doing this - well at least on a carburated engine.
