Part X Question

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by yellowducmaniac, Nov 9, 2022.

  1. Hi All, not necessarily a Ducati related question but pertinent to all bikes really and someone might have some experience of this - i'm currently looking at swapping my 2020 KTM 1290 Super adventure ,i've had it a couple of years and although its a cracking piece of kit i've decided its too much money just stood in my garage doing nothing for most of the year, i originally bought it for trips away with mates - anyway i've also decided that i need to downsize and possibly free up some much needed funds.

My question is i've seen a bike that i want in a dealers fairly local to me that is up for a couple of grand less than my KTM is worth, has anyone ever part x'd his or her bike for a lower priced bike, and if so how did they get on?... i'm not even sure dealers will do it! ...advice welcomed before i go and make a twat of myself in the bike shop.

  2. It is common for a non franchise dealer to underwrite the trade in value with a franchised dealer or a trader. That agreed value is then offset against your purchase. Where the value of the trade in exceeds the purchase price of the ‘new’ bike, a dealer may agree to give you the difference. I have only seen this happen probably once or twice on a trade in that had rarity and value and was with a franchised dealer. You could ask the KTM dealer if they are looking for stock and just sell it back to them, then use the cash to buy the one you are looking at and hopefully pocket the difference. You can only ask and you might be surprised ….. then again, you might not. Good luck. Andy

  3. You say it’s a couple grand less than your KTM? Have you had an offer on your bike then or just looking at values on eBay/autotrader?

If there is a couple grand in it then I’d guess they’ll offer you a straight swap?

  4. My 2020 1290 Super Duke GT was only worth 14K on a trade with BMW (I didn't do it).

  5. Yeah I did it with my z1000 66 plate, I px'd for an 09 r1, dealer had my bike and gave me a cheque and the r1 to make up the difference

  6. I bought a SDR. Kept it a year and barely got time to use it, so it was becoming an expensive ornament. I rang the dealership I bought it from to see if they wanted to take it back into stock. Which they did! They gave me a very fair offer so off it went. So if you’re bike is bang tidy, maybe give the dealership a quick call.

  7. Thanks for all the responses, i'll give it a go at the weekend.:upyeah:

  8. Good luck but brace yourself for a kick in the arse, KTM have a habit of dropping prices or putting on mega deals on new bikes all the bloody time which has a massive knock on to second hand prices. I know I’ve had a few (or more) and still haven’t learnt my lesson.

  10. If you don't get a good price from a dealer, you could put an ad on here to see if anyone will beat the dealer's price. Is it a Gen 2 or Gen 3 bike?

  11. Its a Gen 2 2020 bike, just before the gen 3 came out...160 horses and enough stomp to uproot a tree:D, i'll see how i get on at the weekend first, i was going to bang it on Ebay but their fees are getting beyond a joke! and you usually get loads of nobs asking stupid questions and making offensive offers etc.

  12. Or you get someone who “really wants the bike” but they are currently working offshore but can arrange for someone to collect it……

  13. It’s £25 to list on eBay, if you don’t want the hassle then try WeBuyAnyBike they were the same as my dealer offered me cash for my Tiger. I would have gone with the dealer as it’s less hassle as mine is 2 miles from my house. From my experience you’ll be £1.5-2kaway from what a dealer asks for their stock. I ended up PX’ing the Tiger against my MV and realised £500 more than a straight cash sale to the dealer.

  14. Or my mates experience in September £250 deposit with the balance in January FFS.

  15. Have you tried selling anything on here? It’s like Poundland.
