Morning guys I’ve finally ordered a decat pipe for the mutley Am I likely to encounter any issues (fitting myself) or is it straightforward,ie no sensor issues etc.? I already have the exhaust valve eliminator fitted Hope you’re all well in these strange times ,and many thanks in advance Neal
You don’t say which 1200, 1st gen, twin spark or DVT ? Your biggest and the most common risk/failure is releasing the exhaust manifold nuts. Early preparation, soaking in releasing fluid (not WD40) for at least 24 hours is essential, then use heat on the nuts. Be gentle, add pressure to the spanner slowly and hold the pressure before applying more. A broken stud is not the end of the world but it is a pain in the arse. On my 1st gen 1200, I had an inordinate problem releasing one of the OE exhaust brackets where the bolt goes through the rider’s footrest mount. Andy
Neal it is straightforward. The O2 sensor is on the header so it remains in place. Useful to have the EV eliminator but not essential. Problems may include corroded bolts etc. Can be a fiddle to get to the rear cylinder exhaust clamp. Skinned knuckle getting the exhaust springs in place. Take your time and remember or photograph the configuration of the drain hoses and wire guide when you remove the undertray. Last issue is what to with the heavy carbuncle you have removed PS. I forgot about loosening the front exhaust studs to ease removal/replacement. Refer to the above advice.
Thanks Coman I’ve plans for that masterpiece of Italian engineering It involves it defying laws of gravity on its final journey to the scrap pile
Morning jacko I went for the dominator decat pipe Already had a termi end can fitted , all about the aesthetics tbh as the standard cat , hurts my eyes to say the least I’ll let you know when it arrives
Is the Termi the short one? If so be prepared for a very loud exhaust. In a standard set up the silencing is done in the catalyser. If you remove it it's best to replace some silencing capability with an end can. The short Termi, pretty as it is, has no silencing, just like the standard twin pipes.
Loudness is in the ear of the beholder but I'd say it will be antisocially loud if you start the bike early in a built up area. On the open road, who cares, unless you come across one of those new roadside noise meters/cameras.
I can attest to the loudness comments. Leo Vince decat pipe and Termi short silencer. It will wake the dead! I can also attest to the comments about being careful removing the header nuts. Snapped one of the studs.
I managed to replace mine without doing that. It's another name for the exhaust valve. It's just a flap that a servo pulls a cable on. You could trick it with a spring or two to mimic the resistance of the flap.
+1 for the manifold nuts +2 for the “silencer” clamp nut/bolt +3 for the euphemistically-named silencer-if you fit a short Termi slip-on with a decat pipe, you’ll have *no* silencing at all (although I believe there was/is one decat pipe that had an integral silencer box)
I thought that was it! I’ve taken the valve out anyway. I managed to shear the manifold bolt off which is a real pain as I just can’t shift it. Got it booked in to Ducati Nottingham in December to get it out!! Not going to be cheap but I’ve tried everything to remove it! I just like the look f the stock end Cans but, if it’s just too loud, I’ll bit the bullet and get an end can and DB killer
