Hi, has anyone ever had to change their air box oil re circulation drain pipe, i have taken off my side panels and belly pan, now i am not sure what is the best way to get to the air box to attach the new pipe, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I had to refit mine after it had come off in transit with fairings off. IIRC I found the part of the air box it connects to very easily and then routed it down to eventually have the lower opening held in place by both sides of the belly pan. it’s a 1098 but imagine it’s the same layout. Where/how are you struggling?
Hi Jimmy, Thanks for the reply, i am struggling to find exactly where to locate where i attach the pipe to, thanks. Dale

Hi Jimmy, thanks for that Hi Jimmy, thanks for that, did you locate it from the battery side or the brake peddle side, and also was to the front of the air box or the back, cheers Jimmy
Hi Dale - IIRC is was battery side at front. My advice would be to choose the best routing, then go from top to bottom with the pipe through that route and attach to the airbox. The lower end has a built-in 'grommet' which locates between the 2 halves of the belly pan.
The pipe is located on the front of the airbox IIRC. You might find it considerably easier if you pop the tank off as you then ought to have enough room to remove the old pipe and replace it with the new one. Spraying silicone or some rubber grease over the tip, will ensure you can fit it easily and that it sits correctly within the aperture, to ensure a good seal. You can easily assess this by rotating it a little back and forth once it is in place. Failing that you might need to remove a few components from the front end of the bike, to gain better access, as well as to route it correctly down to the bellypan/lower fairings. Been a while since I worked on one, so forgive the lack of a definitive solution.
Hi Jimmy, i have added a picture, is that the pipe i am looking for, the one with the silver clip. thanks. Dale
Hi Dale - I can't be 100% sure.Am I right in thinking there is a pipe already there and you're fitting a replacement ? If so, can you trace the existing pipe to see if it terminates at the belly pan?
I think position wise you're right Toppling, but when I did this job, I didn't have to remove anything except the fairings. That said, it was on a 1098 and it differs from the 848 slightly.....
Hi Jimmy, yes the top half of the pipe is still attached, and the bottom half fell out, it seems to have sheered off half way down, thanks Jimmy
Mmm - so that would intimate it's a 2 piece pipe? Or something has severed it? I'd say if the connection at airbox is the same, you have a starting point?
It’s only a drain tube, not under pressure - why not just connect the remains of the broken pipe to the new pipe, cut to suit?
Hi Ricky, i seem to have another problem, the reason i was changing the drain tube was 1-because it some how sheered of half way down and fell out, then 2- i noticed it was dripping oil just where the drain tube would have come out the belly pan, so i wrongly assumed it was the drain tube, but having taken the old drain tube out the oil is defiantly not coming out of that, but what i have noticed is that when the oil was dripping out, the bike was on its side stand, but for the last 2 days it has been upright on my paddock stands and no oil has dripped out, any ideas what that could be, thanks Ricky
Hard to say but would suggest checking gasket areas to try and source the leak. I’d start on the kickstand side.
Ok, so you don’t think it’s the airbox drain. I suggest that you check the alternator case mating area. Oil can weep from the rubber grommet where the alternator wires exit the casing - you will need to remove the battery box to properly inspect the area. Once you are in the area, thoroughly clean and degrease the surrounds. Then put a light dusting of talc on the area. Leave for a bit - on side stand. Then you should be able to locate where the leak is coming from by looking at the wet areas of talc. By the way - how much oil are we talking about here? A couple of drips or a full on puddle?
