999 Seeping Oil From Fairing Mount Bracket

  1. Tried to ignore it before as oil from the chain but a decent dribble of oil that’s definitely Motul 300V shade of gold got me worried.

It dribbles off the RHS of that bracket onto the fairings. I’ve removed the small bolt from the middle and found the thread had been stripped and the bolt was very oily. Weird thing is that the casting it goes into is open on the other side so…that only leaves the bigger one on the left as a culprit.

That LHS seems to be very tightly on, thoughts?

Also, best option for the stripped 6mm is to tap an 8mm?

  2. Take the LHS bolt out and investigate.

I always thought it was a bit ridiculous to use such large diameter fasteners tapped into the engine case to hold on the fairing via this bracket.

  3. Crank case bolts loose? Liquid gasket degraded?

  4. It looks oily above that bracket, sure it’s not the clutch pushrod oil seal?

  5. as above, get in there with some cleaner and make the area spotless, and look for trace oil coming from behind the clutch slave cylinder.
if in doubt just get 2 new o-rings and fit them and see if this goes away

  6. As said above, only way is to scrub it, meticulously, clean and examine like a hawk.
I don’t know how far you’ve examined already, but it could even be the sprocket output shaft seal, and can’t rule out a dripping clutch slave cylinder!

  7. That bigger bolt isn’t moving more than 1/4 turn, I wonder if someone has at some point used some glue they shouldn’t have…

    Parts manual says it’s M10x20.

  8. with the risk of cracking your casing if you miss handle the removal of this bolt i would leave it in place if you can and clean the local area and around the gearbox output shaft and Clutch slave cylinder.
then you will be able to see if this is oil from the clutch push rod seals.

  9. Bolt won't move either way now so I'm going to have a go with a bit of heat to see if I can free it up.

Only other option would be to drill it out...

  10. before you go too far, i would confirm that you need to remove it to solve your issue..

it would be realistic that oil is running down behind the bracket and seeping down an out of the bracket hole in front as the bike is sat on its side stand.

  11. That bolt also holds the fairing bracket firmly in place and its now been moved out enough that the bracket is loose so I guess I now have two problems! :)

If I get time over the weekend I'll try a bit of heat on it, if now I'll drill it out with an 8mm. Just hope I don't have to tap a new thread....
