Battering weird things is a weird Southern trait. Nothing other than a fish for me, although I'm partial to a banana fritter, which I suppose is battered really. Agreed on the additional condiments.
Don't forget the opportunity to point at one falling off the plate...whilst shouting escapee! Eventually it will drive the family wild..
In fact you can extend this to if a baked bean falls off your plate...you flattened it with your fist... whilst shouting... he's bean squashed! Ps: not growing up is fun

Had many a portion of F&C's in Whitby, when visiting on the Mutley with a few other Mutley acolytes; delicious and a 'must-have' IMO.
