  1. bought my 900 ss a few weeks ago for £800 , just passed her first mot in six years with no advisories im over the moon , got to admit i thought it was all going pete tong as she was rough as hell for the first 10 miles to the test station but by the time i was headfing home she was alot happier sill a little stutter now and again but im still grinning

    a few thing tho

    1) the mirrors are crap all i see is my elbows and alot od vibes
    2) anything below 2000rpm is rough as hell im thinking this might be a ducati thing
    3) the battery is fully charged but the bike is realy lazy to start , any ideas
    4)can i fit a k&n filter without a rejet
    5) do i need a rejet if im fitting free flowing cans

    cheers for reading

  2. There's plenty on each of those subjects certainly in the SS section of the forum............most pretty recent

  3. It seems to me that if you have never owned a duc before all of the above is something we worry about, until you realise it's all part of the experience. And I've ran classic Brit bikes before. Enjoy your new bike from a fellow 900 newbie, who asked similar questions.

  4. Anything below 4000 rpm is rough as hell so its all good :p

Lazy starting could be cables and earths so get them off, checked, cleaned up and back on.

  5. my first bike was a 750 monster but that was back in 2001 and had a wet clutch , the 900 ss is in a hole new level for me , still smiling tho

  6. None of the Carbed SS's are particularly happy below 4,000 rpm, they seem to thrive over 5,000. Mine hesitates between 4,000 and 5,000 it is the quirky nature of riding an old analogue Italian bike!

  7. I have done a lot of work to my carbs...........It runs OK right down to about 2000rpm when it can be a bit erratic, but not that severe.

  8. I think I struck lucky with Dizzy as she ran beautifully even through towns at low speeds.

  9. 1. yes

  10. Hi and welcome to the nice end of the forum ;)

    1) welcome to the 900ss! - The whole bike suffers from vibrations.
    2) They suffer from a lot of chain lash low down so don't be alarmed
    3) Get rid of the leads from the solenoid and battery and renew with thicker stuff, you'll be shocked at the difference it makes.
    4) Yes you can, common practice is to remove the airbox cover and run the filter with a frame, alternatively you can open the airbox up by boring more holes into it. Personally, I'd go for the frame as it doesn't turn your airbox cover into a cheese grater.
    5) You don't "need" it, but it is recommended especially if you're running a K&N filter, and most people on her will have done just that :)

check out Sim900sl's rebuild log - it'll hav3e most of your questions answered, and as AL says, you'll find all your questions asked in recent threads. Enjoy :)

  11. Get yourself a Powerlet starter re-wire kit. They replace the sub standard/too long oem cables from the battery to the solenoid and the solenoid to the starter with ones that are better up to the job.

  12. pop down to Oxford to sort mine out, I'll buy you lunch at The Trout!

  13. Bloody hell! Over £40 for three silly bits of wire..............well, anyone is daft if they want to pay that.

You can walk into a car junkyard and find decent heavyweight cables for a quid or so...............you can even get a pair of cheap jump start cables.......

.....the connectors at each end cost bugger all, and if you haven't got a pair of the proper crimping pliers, then solder the damn connectors on.

Done for less than £10 max.

  14. and if you can't be bothered to follow Arq's sound (but cheapskate) advice, pop into Halfrauds and choose some car leads of same or similar (longer not shorter) length to those fitted. Plugs will probably be well sooted so change them and then see how it starts / runs. The carbs will probably need a decent clean after an extended layup

    hope this helps

  15. You could always butcher a cheap pair of jump leads. I bought a set with 4 metres of cable for £2.95

BTW, I bought a starter re-wire kit because I couldn't be arsed messing around making the leads up just to save a few quid

  16. Not quite, the one that goes from the solenoid to the starter can be re-routed down the RHS of the engine. The cable can be only 2/3rds of the length, generating less resistance :upyeah:

  17. This is my first Ducati, I ve only had 4cyl Jap bikes, and agree it is a rough old beast below 3500rpm, after that its all good, so Im not worried about it. After all, that's why it's called a thumper.
And Im finding I need to give it a squirt of revs for every gear change down and at very slow speed in 1st with a touch of clutch.
