Reckon he’s always been recognised as a great guitarist, at least by fellow musicians. Boring fact he spent more time with TheThe than he did with The Smiths. As EXPee has stated his autobiography is worth a read, but avoid the twat that is Morrisey book, I sacked his off after the first chapter. A great lyricist he is but his book is only worthy as a firelighter.
don't agree with this bit N, and I think he even spoke as much at the time, that he wasn't getting any credit when it comes to The Smiths, there's only so much limelight available when you're on an ego trip.
Fair enough, I recall him saying he wasn’t appreciated by Mozza as a great guitarist but by his peers he certainly was Unless I misunderstood your original post. There’s a lot of dislike for mozza for how he treated the rest of the band both during their time together and later with the court case over whether the bassist and drummer should get a cut of the touring money. Again his book is worthy of a read, sexpee is a massive fan…..
I remember the music press at the time, Morrissey this, Morrissey that and all the daffodil gladioli bollocks, and few pictures or mention of anyone else in the band and so yes, Johnny Marr was clearly unnoticed by the press at that time.
