1098 My 1098s

  1. Ah I forgot that my screen cracked. If any condensation gets inside then it’ll crack during large ambient pressure changes, no impact necessary. Requires new dash or a significant DIY job to repair. I’d throw a cheap speedo angel thing on it, just it case it provides even a small amount of protection.

  6. I put those cables on mine. My bike was an early one; one of the recalls was a change to the starter-motor gearing to allow easier starts. My bike never ate its battery. The 1299S that I had was a different story. I still have a spare battery for that bike even though I sold it about 4 years ago.

    I have a 1098S. In 2 years I’ve :

    Had new fork seals
    Replaced 2 springs in the gear selector set up
    New battery
    New Reg/rec
    New sprag clutch
    Rebuilt slipper clutch (twice)
    Desmo service

    Needs belts asap in the NY too.

    They are not cheap to keep and run, but so very worth it, I love mine. I’d only move it on for a 998S when funds allow.

    Exact cables and an optimiser mean good starts all year.

    I’m going to bin the QS I think, as it loses proper adjustment too often and I get the bike jumping into neutral or cutting out, then I can’t find neutral when I need it!
     
  8. Had one for a few years now (love the thing). Dad also has a 916 from new too so used that loads- love the nostalgia but it's not a patch on the 1098s. Although if I'm perfectly honest I've had a load of gsxrs before which are far easier to live with day to day. Having said that I don't plan to part with mine any time soon.

    One thing I'd say is these run of the mill ohlins love to eat fork seals, so keep your stanchions clean. I give mine a quick clean with some silicone spray regularly.

    List to do asap mate, also a new battery. As I’ll probably only ride it once maybe twice I am hoping there won’t be much upkeep…. My 899 is my summer ride and just bought a cayman gt4 so I don’t think I will be riding much
     
  11. No!! You want to spray on to a clean cloth (microfibre ideally) and just lightly wipe the stanchions. Idea is to remove dirt/ grime which could otherwise damage the seals. The use of silicone spray means you are likely to leave some minimal residule silicone on the stanchions allowing the seals to glide more freely as they move up and down and prevent sticking. Also the silicone won't damage the rubber of the seals like some alternatives.
    Avoid spraying directly as you don't want to get it on your brakes for obvious reasons.

  12. The ohlins fork seals can be replaced with I think yamaha seals which are much longer lasting, fit the proper springs for your weight and set the sag then set the suspension nice and soft for our bumpy roads, if its a base model fit an ohlins damper.
    Replace the relays at the battery as they will be corroded,a new reg / rectifier, replace the brembo pads with a soft bite pad I wrote off a 1098 in a panic brake situation.
    Bloody great bike ,tons of low down torque, I'd have another in a heart beat.
     
  13. 1. If it has a Ducati quick shifter fitted my advice would be to get it removed ASAP. It causes premature wear of the gearbox which eventually causes the bike to jump out of gear under hard acceleration. The 1098 was never designed to take a quick shifter , the standard gearbox is on a knife edge of design in terms of the power and torque that goes through it. Nova manufacture a much more robust gearbox if yiu are ever unfortunate enough to need a replacement.
    2. Keep a very close eye on the clutch slave cylinder. They are prone to failure. An indicator of a clutch slave wearing out is that the hydraulic clutch fluid gets a lot of air in it and gear changes become difficult. Don’t bother fitting a Ducati Performance clutch slave (if you can find one) they are just as crap. I found the Oberon aftermarket clutch slave is by far the best and virtually eliminates the issue. Clutch slave premature failure can also be caused by a seized clutch rod bearing in the pressure plate. The clutch rod spins and causes the internals of the clutch slave to spin also. This causes the o-rings in the clutch slave to wear.
    3, The original 1098 radiator has a known weakness. The top mounting brackets are not robust enough. This can cause the radiator tear and leak, normally it’s the top left hand bracket. This issue was fixed by Ducati on the later 1198. The top brackets of the radiator are beefed up. I’m not sure if this issue was a ‘recall’ by Ducati or if they only replace failed radiators.
    4. The original spring fitted to the gear selector assembly inside the gear box was not strong enough. Again Ducati beefed up the spring design. Again not sure if this is a ‘recall’ fix.
    5. Potential fuel tank expansion issue (mine has been ok up to now). I know a lot of owners have changed the fuel tank out fo the 1198 tank which alloy (they get them painted in the Bayliss colours) and the tanks holds more fuel. Be ready to experience very low miles per gallon. As you know the bike was never designed with economy in mind.
    6. If it hasn’t got a tracker fitted , I would highly recommend the bike trac system.
    7. Watch out for the speedo. The “glass” is plastic which cracks in direct sunlight. It can also get damaged by brake or clutch fluid from the reservoirs.
    8. The OEM rectifier fails. replace with a MOSFET rectifier

  14. Agree. Definitely needs a harder rear spring and ideally a piston kit in the Ohlins fork as the damping is not good at all.
     
  15. Replace the footpegs with 1098r pegs, the standard ones have no grip, my foot slipped off a couple of times which was a little scarry.

  17. EBay Is your friend here. It’s a must do fix for the 1098. Mine got through 2 OEMs before I made the change. There is a really good instructional thread on here somewhere from a while back by Robarano, a guy who is no longer on-site. It’s fiddly but it can be done with basic knowledge & tools. I did it, so there’s your proof! Don’t know if one of the mods can find it for you but I’d highly recommend it.
