I've just been quoted £364 for a set of Pirelli Scorpion 2 tyres for my V4S Multistrada, fitted and balanced etc, by my dealer, does anyone else think this is excessive? I've never paid more than £260 before, have tyre prices increased that much?
Yes they have for certain tyres, that seems pricey to me though? Is this removal of wheels too, as you’re paying a main dealer? A tyre specialist would be my option to lose wheels, my local Indy charges £25 each end for wheel removal. Have a local tyre fitter will only fit to lose wheels. It’s a minefield out there. My bud has bought 2 sets for his bikes and 4 for his Golf R in one go.
The only saving grace is, I've got over 7000 miles on the rear and it hasn't squared off, it's an even wear across the whole tyre and I definitely another 1000 maybe 2000 miles left on the front, which I'm very please with. I used Metzler RoadTec 01's on my R1200GS and had to chance the rear every 5000 and the front every 7000, so these Scorpion 2's are certainly a better tyre, for me anyway, and I'm not exactly pottering around either.
Prices of everything are going sky high but that seems steep for those particular tyres, demon-tweeks will supply the bare tyres for £253 delivered. So you are paying £111 for fitting and disposal of the old tyres. https://www.demon-tweeks.com/pirelli-scorpion-trail-ii-motorcycle-tyre-package-2007360/ If you have the tools to remove the wheels yourself then you can cut that down by taking them to a tyre fitter. Or you can invest in some tools and learn the joy of changing your own tyres…… All depends of your appetite for hassle vs just pay the man!
It’s a link to the correct product page - it has a dropdown menu with different tyre size options - I assumed the OP would have the sense to choose the correct tyre size for his bike. Feel free to generate a link to the correct tyre size - I think you might find it an interesting challenge……
I have saw cheaper versions here in NI too, but I have also been told they are a different profile and the average milage is apparently a lot less. I may have to suck it up, at least if my local dealer supplies and fits them, I will maintain my full warranty cover. Decisions decisions.
He has a 2022 model - only the Pikes Peak has 17 inch front wheels and the wider rear wheel. The other models have 19 inch front wheels and the much narrower rear tyre as standard. I would have linked directly to the correct size but the Demontweeks website defaults to the wrong size when you copy the link.
Warranty isn’t invalidated if you don’t have tyres replaced at a main dealer - they are a consumable and you are planning to fit the OEM tyre anyway. You should check your existing tyre sizes - the original sizes are 120/70 ZR19 Front and 170/60 ZR17 Rear.
Thanks for all the help guys, I came across these on the thevisorshop.com, which is Crossan Motorcycles, just outside Newry, so that's me sorted.
Tyre prices have gone up massively... even more for the racing type stuff, you only have to look at how much Pirelli Supercorsa SC's are now, absolutely horrendous. Personally I buy from MyTyres and I get them fitted myself, I'd never pay dealer rates, because a dealer charges in time units so likely to be min £60-90 just for the labour of doing the tyre change
I took the plunge a couple of years back and bought all the stuff to change my own tyres....it is very satisfying....if you do, do it, youll get better as time goes on...my first tyre about 90 mins...now i can change a tyre and balance it in about 20 mins or so...
The rear tyre is V rated. Originals are W rated. Not that your likely to be riding ay over 149mph, but insurance might say you had the wrong tyre fitted.
Now that’s a good eye for detail! Look at this crazy variety of tyres! @John Mac821 does your OEM rear tyre say ‘D’ on it? What the difference between Variants D, U, and K are I simply can’t imagine.
To be honest, I can't remember there being a specific D or anything else on them, but I will check this weekend. The info I have kept are the tyre sizes and ratings, so a 120/70 ZR 19 60W TL front & 170/60 ZR 72W TL rear. I believe Z is an historical speed rating up to 149mph and the W is the new speed rating for excess of 168mph and the 72 & TL refers to the total load bearing. Maybe I'm wrong and perhaps someone can enlighten me, but it's certainly too much info when just trying to choose new tyres, eh?
Yep - all that is how I understand it too - but this idea of 3 different variants of the same tyre - with the same specs, is new to me. Demon tweeks states the following but doesn’t stock any 72W variant of the rear tyre… “Please note (K) - Rear K 170/60 ZR17 M/C 72W TL 2803100 has a different structure for improved stability on the KTM Super Adventure 1290 and Adventure 1190. Please note (D) - Front D 120/70 ZR19 M/C 60W TL 2746700 and Rear D 170/60 R17 has a different structure for improved stability on Ducati Multistrada 1200 Enduro” So K is KTM D is Ducati U?? I’m guessing Universal??? The Pirelli site comes up with this for the V4 Multi But click on tyre details and the next page shows this! Really not very helpful! Is it D - is it U? Does it really matter???? My exacting nature doesn’t like this uncertainty - where is Pirelli HQ? I need to go pay them a visit and let them know I’m unhappy - - - - -
