Exhaust Nuts - What Flavour Do You Use?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by steveb123, Jan 7, 2023.

  1. I'm planning to fit an Evotech exhaust/cylinder head guard to my Multi V4 and it requires removal of some of the exhaust clamp nuts. I hoping that the nuts come off without too much of a problem - the bike is less than a year old and hasn't done that many miles.

I was thinking of replacing all the exhaust clamp nuts. The OEM nuts, part number 74810361A, are a reasonable price (£6 for a pack of 5) however I was thinking of copper flashed or brass nuts - what flavour do you recommend?

  2. Copper coated ones.

Im not familiar with the Evotech exhaust guard but am surprised the nuts need to come off the exhaust headers.

FWIW I fitted a Pyramid Plastics fender extender to mine and that immediately cut out all the crap that otherwise was coating the front pair of cylinder heads and exhaust headers.

  3. If you can get nuts that fit, brass. I don't know what is fitted to the V4 but some other models had copper flashed nuts and they still seized. I will have to do something about the ones on my Scrambler before the next season but they are M8 with an M6, 10mm A/F, nut size. I doubt if I will find M8 nuts that will fit without fouling the exhaust..

  4. @West Cork Paul - Evotech have only recently announced their Cylinder Head Guard & Engine Guard for the Multi V4, available as a bundle of both at a bit of a discount or as a bundle with the oil cooler and radiator guards which I fitted from new along with fender extenders (both front and rear). The installation instructions for both the head and engine guards require the removal of exhaust clamp nuts - as did the engine guard on the 1200 DVT/1260 by the way.

I've found loads of suppliers of copper flashed, flanged nuts including some that are "self locking" but I've only found "standard" nuts in brass. Anyone have a specific recommendation of a type and supplier?

  6. High temp K-nuts. Silver plated, self locking and small hex size. A M8 nur has a 10mm hex, M6 has a 7mm hex. They are aircraft spec. We used them for the exhausts in F1.

  7. Nice Nuts - but at about £5 a pop maybe too nice :)

  8. Possibly they would have seemed cheap just after you snap an exhaust stud on the rear head

  10. I second K-nuts. They lock well and can also be had in a smaller hex size if space is an issue (made life a lot easier on the Lotus) I also use ceramic anti-seize as it doesn't contribute to galvanic corrosion and even if the grease bakes off, it leaves ceramic powder behind that keeps doing the job

  11. Pete - can I ask what size K-nuts you ordered (and where from)?

    Thanks in advance

  12. Excellent question, even if you called me Pete not Steve :)

    M6 x 1.00mm

The standard nuts need a 8mm Hex socket while the K nuts have a thinner wall section and need a 7mm Hex socket.

I purchased them from Demon Tweeks but there are a number of other suppliers.
