996 996 Deposit Down!

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by 900theginge, Jan 30, 2023.

  1. Hi all, today I took the leap and put a deposit down on this 996.

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/18575627...GRNhCFcRYa&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

It’s had 4 owners and has done 28k miles. I’ve spoken to the owner who has a stack of invoices which include the last valve clearance check, major service and belts done at Luigi Moto so that’s great although that was just over 2 years ago now. He’s had the nose, tail and frame professionally re painted and had the before pictures of it just looking a bit aged as you’d expect. The tank is NOS (£950 apparently) hence the dark lettering as I’m guessing that was for the 996S? Forks and rear shock also rebuilt recently.

Is there anything I’m missing or need to look into a bit more from the pictures? I’ve had a video of it running from cold and all sounds as it should…to a relative 996 novice. Hopefully going to go and view this Thursday.

    any comments would be great.

  2. It is listed as biposto; does he have the two seater bits n pieces?

  3. Has the original exhausts and the original tank (couple of dings in it) but that’s about it. I also negotiated a freshly Powder coated set of magnesium Marchesini wheels too

  4. Hello and congrats!!! :upyeah:
    Are you sure it’s not a 1999 ?

FYI, an original MY 2000 996 biposto looked like this:

    D6DFAD47-8FCF-49F9-9A22-C764B2F7EABC.jpeg

    Check:
    - Two seater tail and pillion foot pegs;
    - Five spoke Marchesini (aluminum) wheels (1999 still had the 3 spokes wheels).
    - « Snowflake » front discs.

  6. Yea it’s defo a 2000 according to the hpi check. I think that was the crossover year in frame colour right?

  7. Main thing is service history on the bike. And you say it’s had desmo service which would include a check of the rockers presumably.
    It’s a 996 BIP with 20k plus miles, not a collectors item.
Buy it. Ride it and enjoy it for what it is. :upyeah:

  8. yes all that was done at Luigi Moto thankfully. The mileage isn’t too high for the age of the bike IMO but acknowledge collectors go for bikes with less miles on them which come with their own dramas I guess. thankfully I didn’t pay collectors bike money

  9. HPI will be registered date not MY date won't it?

  10. Yep, so potentially a ‘99 bike registered in 2000

  11. does sound like this, I don't know if they did a "parts bin" approach to wheel fitment possibly explaining earlier wheels, but a proper anorak could confirm maybe.

  12. Gold frame and 3 spokes wheels definitely is 1999, first 996 my. There should be a sticker somewhere on the frame to confirm. First registration may have happened a year later.

  13. It’s a 99 registered 00.
My 748r was an 02 my registered in 01. :)

  14. My 996 was bought new by me in mid dec 98. So 99 is not quite the first model year.

  15. I am pretty sure it is…

MY 1998 is the last year for the 916. I am pretty sure there was no overlap between 916 and 996 MYs.
In the automotive industry, MYs often start during the last quarter of the previous year. Have you checked with Ducati? What says the sticker on your frame?

  16. I bought it brand new from Laguna in Maidstone. It was to have been delivered prior to when I bought it but there was a delay of a few weeks. One of the first uk 996’s first registered mid December 98. I was so chuffed when I got it and was out racking up miles prior to Christmas. Even today as has been through it’s life if I go to a dealer and order parts and they ask what year it is they say it can’t be. It is.

  18. Meant in good humour :D Andy

  19. You need to understand the difference between model year/date of production/date of registration…

Ducati never made a “MY 1998 996”. They absolutely made 996s in late 98, I believe you mate, but these were “early MY 1999”.

  20. My seller insists this is a 2000 model as that was a crossover year but interesting to see not everyone agrees with that.
