1200 Enduro Mts 1200 Enduro Is Misfiring

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Desmobrains, Feb 1, 2023.

  1. Hello,

My MTS started misfiring out of the blue. I found this thread and therefore checked the exhaust valve. Indeed there is some rust there, tried to clean it up using WD 40, make sure that turns in full and then started the engine. Went out for a ride, it was fine in the beginning but after a couple of kilometers started again. Initially it was misfiring around 3000 RPMs and not in all modes, but now it does it in all modes and even in higher RPMs, mostly in wet conditions (leaving in Germany and driving it under all weather conditions). When I rev up the engine I see that the valve operates normally. I did not change recently anything and/or visiting a dealer or so. I am using always premium fuel (98+octanes) and the tank was recently fulled. It is becomes really dangerous as you pull the throttle to accelerate and motorcycle is not going.... so I won't drive it again until I resolve the issue.

Did anyone have the same issue? Any suggestions, ideas will be much appreciated.

    Thank you very much.
    Cheers,
    Panos

  2. Faulty HT lead?

  3. Thanks for coming back.
I will go on and test them, but I do not think that the issue is there...
It seems like a well known issue on different models and people replaced the ECU and throttle bodies to resolve it.....

  4. Is it only doing it at 3000 rpm and higher?

It could be any one of a number of things but for starters,

when we’re the plugs last changed?

when was the fuel filter last replaced?

when it happens can you determine whether it’s on both cylinders or just one and if just one which one?

  5. I concur with Tally. Front HT lead is my bet.

  6. Horizontal cylinder top plug lead, put your fingers on it when it's running, if you get an almighty shock, that's your problem, don't do it if you have a pacemaker! Mine had the same symptoms and I've read it many times elsewhere. Couple of wraps of insulation tape around where the wire goes into the cap will sort it, ran mine like that for over a year until i put a new lead on along when I serviced it.

  7. HT leads do cause problems. There's updated parts available. Worth doing all 4 with the updated ones.

  8. As others have said. Front HT lead. The newer ones seem to be slightly harder wearing.

  9. It was doing it around 3000 to 4000 and only in the touring mode, initially.

Now it does it in all modes and starts around 2500 and onwards. When it is cold it is running fine, the problem starts when it reaches around 60 degrees.

Plugs and fuel filter never replaced so far, as it has 24000Km. IMHO, it is not the plugs or the fuel filter as it runs perfectly fine when you started it and there were days which was running without misfiring at all.

But I will test the HT leads and replace the plugs as a first step.

  10. Thank you all for the responses.
Let's hope that the problem derives from the HT leads.
I am going to renew them all as there are updated parts.

  11. Personally, I'd just replace the faulty one, they're not cheap and I've not heard of faults with the other three, that front one gets all the crud off the front tyre and also tends to get damaged when removed to extract the plug. Put some grease around the new one before fitting, it'll make it easier to remove next time.

  12. any joy with renewal

  13. Just had this on mine. It was the horizontal MAP sensor. It seemed to reset itself after a good hard ride and got the code read and cleared by a local service shop.

  14. did the code come up on your dash or did the service shop have to access it

  15. Came up with engine errors. Though not at first. Ran rough and no light. Cleared the rough running and the warning appeared.
Guy had a Texa code reader and showed me the message.

  16. that narrowed it down, engine errors. i,ve had 4 different ducati,s over the last 10 years and the messages and error codes are useless. it might as well say, ha ha your bike is fucked.

  17. Pretty sure it was down to inactivity and maybe moisture. If I'd taken it on a longer run I reckon it would have cleared itself.

  18. Pretty sure that errors that manage to sort themselves only illuminate the error light on the dash for 5 or so ignition cycles and then, if the error hasn't persisted, clear themselves in this regard. The error is still logged for later reading though.

Have had this happen twice on my Multistrada and both times the indicator went out after a few cycles of the ignition with riding in between (don't think that just sitting there and switching ignition on and off will work).

First time was flat battery during storage, sorted itself out on the way to the dealer who read code and reset. Second was an anomaly in the South of France last year where the dash lit up like a Christmas tree on the autoroute. Sorted itself out, indicator disappeared later that day. Read code and reset myself once home with OBDStar. It was a rear wheel speed sensor error, no idea what caused it but it hasn't reoccurred.

  19. recently i connected the battery on my mts 2011 and it would not start, with the error message saying DEVICE DES. that means the electronic suspension node is not recognised or communicating with that network. once i heard a clicking from the starter relay i realised the battery needed a quick charge and it started first time. why did it say device des. you would have though that it could tell the difference between a weak battery and a fault with the suspension function. had a problem with my 1098s in the past and the error code was nothing to do with the fact that the immobiliser was knackered.

  20. Hello, yes I do have an update. I replaced only the horizontal HT cable and all the spark plugs (as they had 24.5K)
and the issue seems to be gone.
I did about 80 Km since the renewal and under wet conditions and everything looks good so far.
But allow me to drive it a bit more and see if it will come back...hopefully not...
    Keep you posted!!!
