Motorcyclists Matter – to ensure that biker related questions are compulsory in the driving theory test

    Responsible department: Department for Transport

In order to raise awareness of motorcyclists on Britain’s roads, Bennetts, the UK's No.1 Bike Insurance Specialist, is campaigning to ensure biker related questions are made compulsory in the driving theory test – who despite accounting for just 1% of road traffic, fall victim to over a fifth of all fatalities on the roads.
Did you know that motorists can currently pass without answering a single question relating to bikers? As many as 7,004 bikers and their pillions lost their lives between 1999 and 2010 and the biker casualty rate is currently a staggering 61 times greater than that of motorists. With questions currently selected at random, there is no guarantee that a question relating to the awareness of motorcyclists will arise in the current test format and this petition is set to challenge that.

  2. This came up on my Facebook a few weeks ago all signed
    I think it's long overdue

  3. This is a worthwhile one imho...........I've been posting the details on Facebook and other forums.....in fact I posted in the Lounge a while back.
Worth posting here though (thanks Tony), not everyone ventures away from the bike specific areas of the forum.....I don't that often!

  4. Petition signed. As Ducbird says, long overdue!

  5. Yep - some of these petition thingies are pretty naff but this one works for me.

Have sent the petition to various other friends n family and FB too.

    Cheers

  6. in my humble two pence worth i dont think it will make any difference........those that had to do the test over the last few years, can you remember any of your other questions? If the questions dont or in the majority wont have any special conetation to or specific interest then its a waste of time.....and carrys about as much interest as a question about having a red cross over your lane on the motorway.......it doesnt stop collisions on the motorway

  7. Andy I see where you are coming from but even if there was one question about bikes and a few paragraphs to read in the highway code regarding having an awareness that bikes are even on the road has to be a good thing.
I'm a great example to put forward
Before i became a biker I had no thought and can honestly say never saw or noticed a bike on my travels until I started riding so my awareness came through being a biker
The only way to make people aware is by being that awareness and for me I feel that everyone should take a bike test. That won't happen as yet so we have to start somewhere.
I sent this to my friends reminding them
this is me the petition is about and that hopefully has made them more aware that next bike they see could be ME

  8. How about not having to rely on whether someone else has seen you or not ( working on a theory of trust no one!)...and actually being in control of your own destiny.............ie your riding style/training?

  9. I ride like that anyway as I'm sure most do but awareness from BOTH sides isn't much to ask for.

  10. Yep indeedy - any thing that helps has got to be worth a try.

  11. i dont believe "most do" or why would the figures quoted above be so disproportionate? that said, i suspect most might say they do.....there is a difference!

Plus i dont believe getting people who are completing the part one of most DSA tests, the theory test, give a toss about the value of the questions, all they see the test for is obtaining a pass whichever way but loose.

There are motorbikes featured in some of the hazard perception tests, and that is more realistic, being able to identify a developing hazard.

  12. I would still like to see more biker elements to the test raising awareness that there are bikes out there.
I took my bike test back 4 years ago and there was plenty of raising my awareness to hazards.
Not one of them pointed to bikers
It made you aware of people though!!

I still maintain that in the test there should be bike related questions particularly.....

If you became aware of a bike aproaching you how long do you think it would take for it to stop at 20/30/40/90/130
Then give a picture senario of what could happen

Andy I agree that each of us is responsible but making a non biking car driver aware has got to be a good thing
