Big Red But Not A Duc

  1. I've been posting progress of this beast on other platforms but figured I'd stick it up here for interest too.

Last summer I became the custodian of a 1996 Leyland DAF 95 360ati. I was asked 18 months or so previously if I wanted it but I was unsure. Mainly because of having somewhere to park it but also the running/maintenance cost worried me. I went for it in the end because I figured that if I didn't take it on then it would end up as a shunter or even scrap.

As some folk on here know I ride with a military veteran race team in the BSB and this unit was the old wagon that used to pull the team trailer. I photographed it in 2017 and printed a picture for the owner of the wagon and that is partly why it has ended up with me. It also became costly to keep it running so was upgraded at the beginning of 2021. The unit sat for nearly two years awaiting its fate. It has been in the race paddock for most of its life, along with the trailer that it used to pull.

It started life up north with Leadbeater Transport and from there it became Marty Nutt's supersport team truck. It's been used by Gary Johnson, Triumph Triple challenge and judging by all the old Tacho disks it has been all over the place. Of note the North West 200 and probably most of the road circuits too. When I cleared out the cab there were multiple Tacho disks with BSB circuits and programs from the 2008 NW200. It certainly has a lot of history and although it has cost me a fair bit to put it back on the road I am glad I have done it. There's still plenty of tinkering to be done and the paintwork is next on the agenda but for now I am happy to have rescued it from a life of yard work or worse.

I will add further posts documenting the progress rather than dumping it all in one go.

  2. First job after driving it home from Kent was to get the vinyl wrap off. It took a while but with the help of the heat gun it came off fairly well. Paint work underneath wasn't too bad and you can still see the outline of the Nutt Travel decals on the doors. The roof section paintwork has taken a beating due the sun so that will need a respray, hopefully the rest will polish up nicely and I am getting it looked at by a sprayer next Saturday to decide the next step.

  3. That takes me back. I was running a Leyland Daf dealership as General Manager between 95 - 97.

  4. Wow, I knew this would throw up a few leads on here. Whereabouts was the dealership? From the howmanyleft website it looks like there are only two of these 360s left from 1996 and I'd love to find out where the other one is.

There will be a run of registrations from the time I'm guessing and from checking what's taxed/un-taxed I can see a few other DAFs with plates close to this one.

  5. I had Leyland Daf in Days Road Bristol plus service outlets in Frome and Swindon. It was Lex Commercials in those days.

  8. Once the vinyl was off I washed the exterior and load bed around the fifth wheel. Worked out how to tilt the cab with the kids and gave the motor a cursory scrub. A deeper clean was required and the underneath got a good de-grease prior to taking it for MOT. Cab is in good condition and just needs a few little things. I've since steam cleaned the interior and taken the curtains out and washed them, probably the first time it's been done in 20 odd years.

  9. I bet the kids love it?

  10. Yep they do, although it only has one passenger seat so they have to take turns. It's on a run this Saturday to Castle Combe so the little girl gets a go. I think the irony of me naming it Greta has gone over their heads though.

  11. Next job, chequer plate off from around the 5th wheel to give everything a good de-gunge. Heavier than it looked and the Mrs wasn't happy about providing the extra muscle. 20220807-_MLS9613.jpg 20220807-_MLS9612.jpg 20220807-_MLS9615.jpg 20220807-_MLS9618.jpg

  12. Ha, I took those ones but I'll take the "young" compliment all day long. The boy does get some good stuff though, I will post some videos he has shot as the thread goes on. I'll be out of a job before long that's for sure.

  13. I was referring to the vid where you took him to get some cheesy fries or suchlike. Shots of you driving with both hands on the wheel. :joy:

And I’m now at the age where I can use the words young/younger with a fair degree of certainty. :scream:

  14. Ha, I'm sat here now laughing out loud and the boy is in the background asking me what I'm laughing at. Makes sense, you've seen those videos on Tumblr or Twitter then. I thought I was losing it a bit as I didn't think I posted any of his work here yet. I think I am at the age of fair degree of certainty too but perhaps I'm on the cusp, hence the confusion :joy:

  15. I got to the vid via your racing blog hyperlink. I stay right away from all of the social media crap, but MoGs are allowed that privilege.

  16. Im intrigued now

  17. Well, this year I shall be the same age as my father was when he gave up riding bikes.

And yet, here I am, seriously considering PXing my 18 month old Street Triple R for the latest model. Anyone want the previous model with less than 2k on the clock? :joy:

  18. Been to Castle Combe today in the wagon. I wasn't riding so figured I'd have a trundle out with the girl child to turn a few spanners for the race team lads that normally work on my race bike when I'm riding. I'll post another few project images and words from previous tinkerings tomorrow. 20230304-_MLS0841.jpg 20230304-_MLS0847.jpg 20230304-_MLS0850.jpg
