so finally going to get my track hack fettled and need to tend to a hole in the fairing after an unplanned excursion last time i was on track. so far i have bought this https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01B85H5C6/ref=ewc_pr_img_1?smid=A3QLTTR5CX4IKS&psc=1 the hole is about the size of a tennis ball ultimately i want to be able to acheive a reasonable painted finish with rattle cans so in addition to the above, what more do i need to buy. im thinking - filler - rattle cans - wet/dry paper? any links to the above appreciated. not planning on doing a trip to halfords dont mind spending more for better quality. apprecaite its a track hack but im looking at this cosmetic project as a labour of love! i have a dual action machine so can i use that for the rubbing/sanding/flattening?
Good quality duct tape. Put it over the hole on the outside which will make the repair far easier as it will help to keep the shape/ curve. It also prevents raised height of the filler. I'd get prepaint cleaner to wipe over the surfaces before spraying. I recommend high build spray filler which you use on the final surface prep, prior to paint. Lastly don't attempt this job unless you are in a warm room. The chemicals wont work properly, the filler will crumble and dry too slowly, and the paint will bloom (finish looks milky). Enjoy the job, its satisfying to look at afterwards, just take your time.
Look up a local spray paint supplier with a retail shop for the best quality. Though you can probably get it all from Halfords too.
I used a carbon fibre patch on the inside face and automotive grade body filler to fill the outside surface. The filler held up and stayed in place but didn’t take the paint particularly well. I realised too late, I should have used a sealer before undercoating. Andy
That will be fine for the hole. As said, tape up the outside and do from the inside. Get plastic bumper repair filler. Don't bother trying to paint unless it's at least 15 degrees.
ok so i went to halfrauds and with some real time advice from ye old good egg @Expat Jack my haul of stuff now includes - selection of wet/dry pads for my DA machine - some contour wet/dry pads - plastic filler - fibreglass repair stuff - meths - isopropyl alcohol - wipes what i have not bought it any primer/paint. seems like one 300ml can wont be enough and this stuff is expensive so i need to tap up local paint people. i also want to try to match the tank as much as possible here it is in old clothes
