One of my personal favourites! John Frosts autobiography is an amazing book, and well worth a read if you fancy a bit more military history.
Tmwslv is a superb film. Although you forgot to mention lee marvin I like a bridge too far, especially Sean connerys scenes, but always felt it was missing a little something when compared to films like the Longest Day and Laurence of Arabia
Bloody hell, don't tell me your TV provider is having a "the Duke" month as well? And you forgot Slim Pickens, Lee van Cleef and several other Western Movie regulars.
Virtually anything with James Stewart in it is brilliant. The man was a true hero,Liberator pilot during the War who didn't make a big deal of it afterwards So when he was asked if acting was difficult,he just looked blankly at the Interviewer... Top man, great actor
I read somewhere the he would never answer questions about being a bomber pilot. He always used to say it was just his duty. If it ever came to it, I wonder if I'd be so modest
Different generations My old grandad fought/was wounded/gassed in WW1,but apparently never said a word to anyone about it.Used to scare the life out of me when I was a nipper,he'd sit for hours just looking into the fire, smoking a roll-up and not saying a word ... And a recently-deceased Uncle was just the same, fought from the first to last days of WW2,wounded twice. Out of the blue,(we were not close or anything),he started telling me that,at Monte Cassino, his best mate had been killed 20 feet away taking my Uncles turn at fetching water, but the worst thing was some of the starving Italian civilians had turned to cannibalism His daughters told me he'd never mentioned the War to his immediate family,in all those years..
Same for my Dad too. He was a tank commander, awarded the Military Medal for his actions in a horrendous tank battle in France, and never said one word to me about it. Only found out about the horror of it when my brother started researching after his death. I used to think he was a miserable bugger, now I know why!
We need a section for this guys! I am fascinated with these WW2 family/friends stories. We need to share and keep these memories alive.
And he was a miserable bugger too! Must be a tank thing. My Grandfather was a WW1 and WW2 veteran. Served in the RFC/RAF in WW1 in France, Egypt and Italy, then recalled to the RAF in WW2 demobed at the age of 65.
