Cam Belt Advice

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by JohnnyGraham, Mar 22, 2023.

  1. I’m in the process of changing the belts on my 2015 Monster 1200s,I have the covers off and the old belts still in place with the cam pulleys locked up with a pair of locking tools,as nothing now can move is it simply a case of fitting the new belts and tensioning them?

    TIA

  2. Is the horizontal cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke?

Have you got a workshop manual or looked at any YouTube guides?

  3. Yes, but make sure that every thing is in the correct position. The dot on the bottom pulley should line up with the line on the engine casing. And mark reference points on the cam pulleys and and adjacent points on the cylinder heads to be sure.

  4. It should be and the vertical cylinder will be halfway down the inlet stroke with the valve fully open.

  5. Thank for your reply, don’t have a workshop manual, yes I have watched you tube videos,I have the vertical cylinder at BDC,does that mean the horizontal is at TDC and how do I know it’s the compression stroke, sorry for my ignorance but it’s the first time doing this

  6. Line up the dot on the bottom pulley with the line on the engine cover and everything will be in the correct position. Then lock the cams and mark them for safety. Then you can change the belts.

  7. Very small centre punch mark on the bottom pulley now lined up with the notch on the casing, locked in place, should I worry about anything else being lined up?

  13. Message me your email and I'll email them over, they're scans of articles

  14. Have sent you a message with articles attached, I've used this method at least 10 times (6 different Ducati modes including 2 different generations of monsters) , including 2 track bikes with no issues, I don't have/ use cam locks either, but they would be handy!

  16. What method are you using to correctly tension the belts, phone app for twanging the belts or Facom belt tension tool?

  17. Performance bikes article says to just twist it, it's the method I've used many times, with no issues

  18. I’ve downloaded the gates carbon app on my phone and iPad and got a little microphone to use, waiting on the belts to arrive

  19. Just twist them as per the performance bikes article, and possibly compare with the app?

  20. Sooooo, talk me through the twist method,to be quite honest I would prefer a physical test,I will use the app aswell just to see if it works
