I thought a thread I should have bought might be fun. As I said on the random picture thread I passed on buying a Ferrari Dino and Fogarty's race 888 both for 8k. I think the Dino is around £300k now, and the 888 maybe £40k? Anybody done better (or worse....)
I once had the chance to buy a SS100 Brough Superior and sidecar for £300.The problem was I didn’t have the £300!
Should have bought the nice old cottage in the local village, early eighties . . 40 grand !! How will you ever afford that my dad said. He was probably right.
Turned down a £500 late sixties 250 Desmo because it was scruffy… fast forward about 30 years or so and I happened to find out a customer bought it from the same guy, one of my dad’s friends. Turns out it had a huge racing pedigree, had won at the IOM and was worth at least £30k…
Tricky one this. The stand out example is probably my mates 748r when he sold it in 2017 for £7500… I’d done almost al l the miles it had done over the last year, knew and loved the bike. was scared of the now ex-missus at the time….
I should have bought back my Dizzy when we crashed Was under the control of a crazy ex at the time who wouldn't let me get her back
This isn’t something I should have bought, but something I sold and wish I had kept. In c.1997, I sold a 1979 wide-body non-turbo 911 for £9k. It’s probably worth £60k nowadays and with £9k then being equivalent to about £20k in today's money, I lost £40k on the deal.
Sold this “full Ohlins” 748R for £5k or maybe £5.5k in 2011 when I was absolutely broke due to piss-take legal aid rates. It still hurts.
First house I looked at on a new estate in Tamworth. Backed out because I wasn’t sure about the relationship I was in at the time & didn’t want the hassle. Was £49.5K, by the time the estate was finished the following year, that house was up for £85K
I was offered a BMW Z8 for £30k in 2001. They’ve dipped back to under £200k now, but were double that a couple of years ago.
2 things I should’ve bought. MK1 RS2000 off my mate from College, I’d just bought a new house (£42,950) and didn’t have the £2K he wanted. The other around the same time was my mates RD500 in Marlboro colours, what a bike that was. He sold it for £1700. The RS is probably £40-60K where as I’ve seen RD 500s for £20-30K, there is one in the Motorcycle Mart in Kidderminster for £20K
I messed about on an immaculate Yamaha IT490 over £300. That was 2 years ago, it’s worth double now. Many years ago, my Dad was offered a commemorative E-Type for something like £5k and turned it down.
Will there be a 'Things I bought that I shouldn't have' thread... I could contribute to that.. or just sit back and let the long haired general do it for me....
In 2012 I heard a news report on the radio about Bitcoin which had doubled in price that year to £10 each. . . Well that's clearly a bubble you can't fool me.
Mid 90s - Should have put down £10k on an ex council house in the next village selling for £44k, could have paid it off in 10 years. Bought a new 916 instead, which cost me £246.00 a month over the next 7 years and 45,000 miles. Although I'm still not convinced it was a bad decision.
