Hi, I am looking for anyone who currently owns, or has owned a 1981 Ducati Mike Hailwood Replica. I own a 1981 MHR which sometime during it's life, someone has replaced the original fairing with a 1984/85 2 piece MHR Mille fairing. I want to restore the bike to it's original condition and am trying to find out at what chassis number Ducati stopped using the 1 piece fairing and started to use the 2 piece fairing. All the restoration books and everyone who restores these bikes know that sometime during 1981 Ducati made the change to the 2 piece fairing, but when, nobody knows for certain. Looking through photos on forums and throughout the web I have found 3 with a 1 piece fairings and the rest with a 2 piece fairings. Hence my dilemma. My chassis number is DM900SS*901044. The ones I have found with a 1 piece fairing are within 24 below this number, and all with the 2 piece fairing are above this number. So if you own a 1981 MHR or did own one, please get in touch and let me know how close your chassis number is to mine and if it originally came with a 1 piece or 2 piece fairing. I understand if you don't want to give me your chassis number, but I assure you I am not trying to clone a MHR. If I get it right, there should be a photo on my bike in it's current state attached to this post. My original UK registration is UNM269W. If you remember owning this particular bike, please get in touch with me. If I manage to figure out which was the last chassis number with a 1 piece fairing, i will post it to all Ducati forums so that future restorers know about it Thanks Allen
I'll leave this is General Discussion so more people are likely to read it. Good luck with it
If you fit a one-piece fairing instead of a two-piece, how exactly do you think you are going to check the engine oil level, or top up the oil? Just take a look at the relationship between the fairing and the oil filler. Good luck with that.
That's exactly why I modified the one piece Stucci fairing I fitted to my Le Mans into a three piece, with upper and two lowers..........It would have been a right P I T A otherwise.... But my mate with his 1980/81 MHR (one of the first batch) below didn't seem to have any bother with the one piece job. AL
Hi Pete1950 I know that the 1 piece makes it difficult to service the bike, but that's what an Authentic restoration is all about....putting the bike back to as original as possible. Allen
Hi Arquebus, Thanks for the post. Could you ask your mate what his frame number is, and if he has a lockable filler cap? Allen
Hi all, I would like to thank all who replied on this forum to this post including those who contacted me offline, and a special vote of thanks to Robert who is responsible for the Bevel heaven frame number registry- there is a square case registry too. Bevel Heaven - Vintage Ducati Bevel Drive Motorcycle Extravaganza. Bevel Heaven - Vintage Ducati Bevel Drive Motorcycle Extravaganza. click on data index top left navi. With Roberts help I was able to track down 2 MHRs with slightly higher frame numbers than mine. 901051 is a 1980 and has the 1 piece fairing, and 901067, late 1980 early 1981 which came with the 2 piece fairing. So we have managed to get down to 16 frame numbers where in between, Ducati changed from the 1 piece to the 2 piece fairing. If there is anybody out there whose frame number is between 901051 and 901067, please do respond to this post and maybe we can tie down the change to a specific frame number. I can now source the 1 piece fairing and the few other bits and pieces I need and get down to doing the restoration. Photo's will be posted here once it is done. Thanks Allen
Hi I currently own this MHR with the registration you have posted on 2013 post, I find it quite strange as I just recently purchased this MHR on the registration plate you have disclosed but on a different chassis number! Can you confirm if you the bike or if it has been sold. I ask as the seller I purchased bike from expressed he inherited from his twin brother over 25 years ago! Obviously you can understand my concern so would appreciate any help you can offer.. was your bike a uk bike/ Spanish bike etc etc it all seems a little odd two bike having the same registration! regards Neal
Given the level of legitimate concern expressed here, would you be able to make contact with the OP via an email address and ask him to contact N Brand, even if privately, off-forum?
The OP’s profile is set for him to receive emails when a post is made referencing him. So he should already know about it. If he wants to make contact then I’m sure he will.
