Speed Cam Detectors

Not me, I drive/ ride thousands of miles every year in the UK and despite spirited driving on occasion, I am pleased to have a clean licence (though I have done a speeding course). Stick to the 30mph speed limit in built up zones, under 78 mph on the motorway and with a little luck -and prudence- you won't need one.

I don't understand how anyone keeps a clean licence these days.

 

We've heard this: All cameras on M1 and M25 go live at midnight tonight, set at 72mph.
Auto ticket generating system. Watch your speed and tell everyone else to.

Urban myth or real, we're not sure but from a good source. If anyone knows more, please tell us.

Not as dull as riding a pushbike, which you will be if you consistently drive over 78 on the motorway or over 30 in built up zones in town! The nearby main road to me, is a 30, and has more than 8 pairs of speed cams over a 15 min journey to the next town.

 

Be aware that the speed limit on most 30mph roads in Wales, will be reduced to 20mph from September.
Average speed cameras now in operation (40mph) over the Black Mt road and more being put up all the time. There’ll be a point where I’ll spend more time looking at the clocks instead of the road ahead

 

As you live up in North Staffordshire you’ll appreciate the statement made by my mate back in the 90’s. ‘The A34 has more cameras than Hollywood’,

I was advised about 4 years ago that the old GATSO camera no longer work due to the inability/cost to process the film in them. That was at Boston bike night by an ex traffic policeman on a bike safety/speed awareness exhibition.

 

I see it says it has a headphone jack for motorcycles but no mention anywhere that it is in anyway water resistant and I can’t see any plugs or covers for any of the input sockets?

Also in the demo videos is it actually detecting the cameras or just using your gps location cross referenced with a known camera location database (which they advise you download and update monthly), in which case it’s not much better than Google maps or Waze?
I’ve seen some forces camera vans now have extremely long lenses catching you from 1km away, often set up 1km from a bend in the road, as you come around the bend at 90, the unit may detect the radar but it’s already too late by then?

Too many ifs and buts for £750+ for me?

 

In Dorset they’ve replaced most of the old Gatso’s with these now

But it seems they’ve only bought the actual camera for about 30% of them and they move them around regularly so you don’t know which ones are active and when…..

 

‘Twas the same for GATSO they only had a few with cameras in. I’ve been ticketed twice by GATSO but nothing so far in the digital age. Some of the GATSO units have been burnt out near me, clearly someone was very upset.

 

I’d be giving myself a proper bollocking if I fell foul of a fixed gatso these days. It’s the sneaky bastards with lazer technology in vans that are the threat to any speeding fun. It’s part of the reason I quit road riding. A Sunday morning blast these days could easily cost you your license and years of elevated insurance premiums. Pah…

 

Speed limits are utterly insane now. There’s a road near me, which in a 1 mile stretch goes from 60 to 40 to 30 & back to 60 200yds before the roundabout where there’s a school 20 zone. Most cars trundle along the whole length at 20 & if you’re new to it, you’re going to get done.

 

I read an article recently hinting that a couple of years from now, the countryside will be full of angry gammons thrashing their petrol sports cars…. It’ll be the only place to get away with it…. Errr, stand up me

 

That’s bonkers.

 

That’s why I bought a scrambler, gets tedious over 60 for any length of time, the Multistrada was too comfortable at ton up speeds

 

The 20’s are only in built up areas where at least the town I live in is near impossible in any case. Parked cars, pedestrian crossings roundabouts and other traffic calming measures.

I’m not familiar with the Black Mountain Road but I’ll assume it’s similar to many mountain roads I encounter in that it’s a barely 2 way road.

Fine for motorcycles but maybe not for cars at NSL passing each other.
