From photos it's both sides but in the same location. I'd have to agree that my first thought was that it had been caused by over tightening in the first place. I learn't 40years ago on cars that I was too cacked handed so never go near ANY fastener on car or bike without torque wrench and correct torque tables. Don't know if 749R is different but torque for top yoke on 999R is 23Nm & 14Nm on lower yokes. That's same in 2003 & 2006 workshop manual
If it's forged then could be repaired. You might end up needing to machine it as not totally convinced the welding wouldn't cause distortion as alu is notorioulsy fickle to weld. All the crack would need to be removed so there wasn't a local stress raiser for it to occur again. By the times it's done it may not be massively cheaper than buying another one. How did you remove the number plate?

I've just seen this. You bought this from The Bike Specialists right? Do you have a picture of how it was when you bought it because it certainly wasn't cracked when delivered to them? If you don't I'm pretty sure that I do. Presumably you would contact them for some kind of warranty if you were unhappy with your purchase instead of whinging on a forum and throwing me under the bus. Cheeky cunt!
In the images Sev posted, the Ducati markings on the top and bottom of the yoke look consistent with die casting, particularly the Ducati ‘symbol’. if machined from billet then it’s likely these would have also been machined as well so wouldn’t have the rounded edges they have in the picture. Similar issue if forged, the markings would have been stamped or machined. Looks like the chamfers around lightening and fork leg holes were machined and the underside skimmed as you can see the machining marks, but most of the top surface looks ‘as cast’. All imho of course….
The thread was started because I was looking for a replacement top yoke not as a whinge about anybody or any dealer or about warranty claims. I was asked for a photo and somebody else posted a link to a previously cracked top yoke. If i'd not looked at the link I wouldn't have seen that you were the poster of the cracked top yoke photo with the crack in the identical location. Maybe it's all a coincidence and if so then I apologise.
A brief check on the internet suggests that part number: 34110411A should still be available from Ducati, at around £400. Perhaps a UK Ducati dealer would help with this. Good luck. Tom. PS. Consistent with the previous thread, it appears there are 3 possible part numbers for the 999R Top Yoke, depending on bike: 2004 - 2005 = 341.1.041.1A ; 2006 = 341.1.035.1A ; 2006 Xerox = 341.1.041.2A . The 999 and 999S versions for each year seem to use: 341.1.035.1A . The numbers can be checked using the link below: https://www.ducatiomaha.com/pages/ducati-oem-parts . Note: Apparently, the 999R Xerox has an anodised black finish Top Yoke.
My point is that you should be taking this up with The Bike Specialists as the supplying dealer. It certainly was my bike and the triple clamp was professionally repaired and the image you have posted shows the yoke back in 2018. Post an image of the clamp post repair to give a more accurate representation. Your post makes it seem as though I passed the bike on with a quick bodge hoping no-one would notice when in fact the bike was lovingly cared for and wanted for nothing. Anyway, if the repair has failed this is clearly a common theme with the 999R so maybe approach Ducati for a goodwill gesture although the bike will now be approaching 20yrs old. Failing this, I'm sure The Bike Specialists will be accommodating. Failing either of these, I'll happily take the bike back if you remain unhappy with your purchase but please don't throw me under the bus like that, I'm a genuine enthusiast and above all would wish you to enjoy the bike.
