Quiet Clutch Mod Done (edited)

  1. I have just looked at my clutch as this weekend it started slipping slightly when cold nothing major but noticeable I have owned this 749 for around two months and the former owner had a few things done which as it turns out did not match his description of work carried out but no worries.

He had carried out the quiet clutch mod and it was releatively quiet but on disassembly I discovered that the mod was not correct too much play in stack hieght.

So I removed the full clutch and tried to pt it back to standard ie "rattly " but no luck as one of the metal plates is missing so the clutch now stands as one metal plate and alternate friction plates except in the middle of the pack where I have had to put two friction plates together due to the missing metal plate and I cannot even find the convex plate ! This has given me a stack hieght of 37.3 mm. So will see how it goes with the set up this weekend and report back with results. Not sure how two friction plates will work in the middle but I reckon it should be no worse than the two friction plates in the bottom of the basket .Using the lever lifts the pressure plate and the plates are slack so fingers crossed.

  4. UPDATE:
So had a run out today and he clutch was spot on no slipping very slight rattle but not the usual sound slight drag initially and after a hard run and a few drag starts all is well so I am very happy.

  5. Hi Jody,

    Nice 'How to'!

However in the last to pictures it looks like you have rearranged the plates before going in (now having a steel plate first). I am guessing the right way is the picture were you a measuring the stack - right?

  6. Sorry to be digging out this old thread but I’ve done the quiet clutch mod on my 999 and found that with a stack height of 38.5mm that neutral was impossible to notch into unless you rock the bike backwards and forwards.

Stack height of 36.5mm made it easier but still not as easy as standard height without a friction plate at the bottom.

    Any thoughts?

  7. Go back to a stack height that actually worked?

  8. That’s not the point, standard height with the bottom steel plate replaced with a friction is what makes it difficult to notch neutral. In other words the height is standard, it’s the quiet clutch mode that does it.

An overall height of 36.5mm with quiet clutch mod makes it easier.

    My question is, why?

  9. I don't do it that way.

I build the stack height up until it is between 3.5 and 4mm from the top of the inner hub.
Although I do always measure the underside of the pressure plate to endure it won't bottom out with the plates that low.

I've only had an issue with one of the bikes I've treated this way, but I dropped it to @3mm and it was fine.

But, I've never built a 'Quiet' clutch up with a standard pressure plate, only aftermarket ones, so that may have something to do with it.

  10. Ah but my pressure plate is aftermarket, it’s a Ducabike.

Not being able to notch into neutral at a standstill (or rear brake on with paddock stand) suggests…something is dragging?
