V4 Oil Usage - V4s

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Oly, Apr 21, 2023.

  1. Had my running service at 620 miles.
Just clocked 1100 miles and the oil sight glass level is around 20%
Last week it was around half which was where it was after the service.
    Not full.
Do I need oil and is this normal usage?

  2. Best to keep accurate records of how much oil it using between top ups

    DATE/mileage/Volume

always top up in the same place in your garage.
Always with engine oil hot or cold so temperature isn’t affecting volume. The manual will tell you how to check it.

It will also say what is acceptable usage. I had a bike use 1.5litres per 1000 miles. Way to much.

  3. At the risk of being shot down, IMO, I’m not surprised that, at this early point, to see some oil usage. The bike is filled from the factory with a thinner oil for the running in period which is supposed to help bedding in, a process that can take a couple of thousand miles. Modern fully synthetic oil is very searching and engines can and do use a bit. Give it a few 100 miles more, top up and monitor it. Andy

  4. The V4 has the weirdest oil management I’ve ever seen. I run a Panigale track bike so I change the oil regularly. I measure oil taken out and put the same (new oil) back. Then leave it 24 hours to check the sight glass. Don’t be tempted to top up if looks a bit low. Or if you do, do it in very small increments and leave it an hour or two before you check it again.

Obviously dealers won’t have time for this faff. I believe they change oil via weight or volume. The sight glass can suck you in to over filling.

  5. I think dealers and manufacturers refer to it as cutting oil.

  6. So far with 13K miles on the clock and two annual services my V4S has not used any oil at all between services! I check it regularly and it has not changed at all, maybe the sight glass has a sticker on it :)
