998 998 Running Way Too Lean

  1. Hi collective.....

I have been building a 2003 Ducati 998 for the track / display over the last 6 months. Just got it on the dyno today and although it runs well and makes good power (125 hp at rear wheel), it is running very lean. My dyno tech says he had in years gone bye, known of resistors that can be put in to the air intake temp sensor setup to make the bike think it is cooler and for it to therefore throw more fuel in. Anyone know anything of this, and perhaps know where to get one from (preferably UK) ?

His other alternative was to find a 998 Power Commander but it looks like these may have been discontinued ???

  2. What is your setup? Exhausts/ECU mapping?

  3. Dude, let it reflash on the dyno, by a respected specialist. No PC needed, nor the stupid air/temp sensor.

  4. While I have had it I haven't done anything with engine performance parts, only suspension, rearsets, race subframes and fairings, brakes, etc. But from what I can see it has.... Termi exhausts. ECU was faulty when I bought the bike, so got a replacement ECU with exact same part number on it.

But I bought the bike from insurance company as damaged so no knowledge of its engine build or spec really. All I could say is that it looked like it had been "restored" then taken on a track and lowsided, as the clocks had about 40 miles on them and bike had clearly all been cleaned up, but the tyres which were pretty old (maybe why he came off), had bobbled on the outer edges which is evidence of being on the track rather than road. I guess previous owner took it to the track to "test" it, dropped it, then took it home and pushed it over on the road outside his house then claimed off the insurance.

Here are some photos showing the bike without its fairings, and photos of the engine and ECU.

I was very surprised by the figure it got on our dyno as ours is quite pessimistic, so to get 125hp and 77 ft lb of torque, measured at the rear wheel surprised me as I thought the standard 998 came out the factory with just 121hp at the crank so probably 110hp at the wheel ????

  5. Running lean because you are running a stock ECU. You need to reflash it to DP to give a better base line for the fuelling. As said above, get the ECU set up by a tuner with experience with The IAW5* family of ECUs.

  6. Any suggestions on places to get this done in the UK or if there is a system / software where you can do it yourself?
