Gold It Is! (for The Wheels)

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Relentless, Apr 27, 2023.

  1. I’ve got an IAM Skills day coming up at the end of May so will be throwing the Multi around Thruxton to see what it can do :grinning:

The bike I was “just going to ride” has taken on a life of its own and I’ve decided to bolt on a set of 1098S Marchesini forged rims just for good measure, and because “track day”……it needed new tyres anyway so it made sense

Anyway, my original plan of going black powder + re-applied red pin-stripe for the OEM look has gone out of the window. I spotted this on another forum basically, with the same wheels, and it’s gone down hill from there:

The colour is “Illusion Spanish Fly” by Prismatic Powders (USA). Thankfully I’ve found a UK supplier and my local alloy specialist can do the work.

So, with a bit of luck I’ll have them sorted and a set of M9RR’s fitted up with enough time to get them scrubbed in before they hit the track. Will be interesting to see if they work as well on the Multi or whether I have a “OMG, what have I done!” moment :joy:

I did look at the OEM type golds but to my eye they were just a bit plain. My bike has a Ducati decal set on there so it’s not like it looks OEM anyway really

I’ll post up some pictures once they’re done for anyone interested.

  3. wheel.jpg nice :upyeah:
i had the wheels on my PPV4 changed to slightly less 'bright' gold (before i then went for carbon rims ). thought they looked good

  4. Subjective, but I prefer that more subtle gold:upyeah:

  5. I love the look of gold rims and had them on my last 1250GSA, but they were a Royal PITA to keep clean.

  6. You are aware that the IAM skills days are speed limited and parts of the Thruxton track will have coned lanes ? Andy

  7. Yep, I am indeed. I’m fine with that. I’m not looking to go Banzai, just a chance to push the Multi harder than I would on a public road.

The Skills Days are perfect for that as you know everyone there rides to a good standard (and won’t do something ridiculous), you can get insurance cover for the day without a complete hassle and they’re reasonably priced considering they include a fair amount of class room time as well.

I’ve thrown my KTM RC8R around a few IAM Skills Days and always found them really good.

if you’re looking for a full on, full beans everywhere, track experience……you’re absolutely right, this isn’t the track time you’d be looking for.

@ymfb - good point! I’m a casual rider these days so should be able to keep on top of it. If it’s a complete ‘mare I’ll go back to stock black, but I’m pretty particular about my bike cleaning / detailing so hopefully that’ll see me through

  8. I opted for Cosmic Gold with a matt finish for my V4S mutley spares at my local powdercoaters fitted with lovely Dunlop TTs.

  9. At one time I was strongly considering anodising the wheels. Stayed with the original finish in the end as adding another color into the mix would give a rather "busy" appearance

  10. Yep, like that . Subtle and tidy would normally be my approach too.

I’ve always done that so this time I wanted something a bit less safe and a bit more Marmite. It’s a gamble to be sure.

  11. Now, if the frame was black or even red, I.e. not matching the wheel finish I'd definitely anodise the rims

  12. Im a wheel freak, every bike I've owned ends up getting the colour changed. My old 1200s had the treatment and now the 1260s is going to be done a similar Gold. Screenshot_20230429-194735~2.png Screenshot_20230429-194800~2.png Screenshot_20230429-194715~2.png

  14. Here're some colors I was considering, the first and the last photos is the shade I originally landed on...

  16. Gold is it only if it's 4 nines. Solved!

  17. I decided to stick with original rim color as it matches the frame. Thought that adding gold wheels would make for a busy appearance. I might have moved forward with anodizing if the “gold” on the wheels would perfectly match the forks but the anodizing has its limits….
