  1. I am probably get 1001 suggestions here, but I need to ask!

A buddy of mine wants to come over to the UK in July and wants to hire a bike and go for a ride with a 2 night stop over.

That is he arrives late afternoon at Heathrow on the Saturday, and we need to be back Monday night.

I am based near heathrow so anyone got any great suggestions for a tour/route avoiding long stretches of boring mways?

I did think of Normandy, but with ferries it becomes a bit prohibative and we would need more time.

Perhaps wales, Lakes, derbyshire, am open to suggestions! just nice roads....

  2. Hope you get this sorted. One link here might give some ideas

    Derbyshire>North Peak >Westmoreland>Lakes = some great roads.

A303 west and on to West Country was good years ago. Guess its like a M way nowadays?

Let us know what you decide. This will be one to watch, as folks on here will have some great suggestions I think.

  3. The coast road from Lyme Regis to Wyemouth would be nice some great views along the way maybe a trip to Portland bill

  4. Yep - the 303 is bitsa dual carriageway and speed traps.
I recommend avoiding unless you want to get from A to B quickly - but then you run the risk of cameras (fixed, mobile and unmarked stuff).

Going west I'd take the A272 from sunny Sussex over to Winchester.
    Then A30 to Salisbury
A354 / A35 to Blandford Forum then Dorchester ....followed by the Weymouth / Lyme Regis run as suggested.

Lyme to Exeter was good, then over Dartmoor to Launceston and beyond...?
    Over to Alan P..?

  6. South Coast, up into Exmoor to the North Coast and then down to Dartmoor would all be brilliant, and a beautiful sample of the UK if he doesn't know it very well.

  7. Nice one.
The roads from Exeter, up through the Exe Valley, Tiverton and north to Lynton, Lynmouth and Porlock - beautiful scenery and twisty too in parts.

  8. Thanks folks....sounds great. South coast here we come!

  9. I'd be hitting the chunnel and aiming for southern Belgium. Empty, well-surfaced roads and quality beer, and only 3 hours from Calais.

  10. Of course, as we all know, the roads in the West Country can change from relatively empty to rammed with cars n caravans when the school holidays start........

  11. The guys here have given you some top roads to ride....I've done them myself...excellent advice, just a bit of a slog to get there.

  12. I'd consider mid-Wales. Almost all routes are great roads and matching scenery and there is very little traffic. I've been out there on a bank holiday and seen very few other vehicles. You can't say that for the South Coast or the South West and I've lived both in Devon and on the Welsh borders.

  13. Thanks for all the tips...I think well do something like a quick scoot down to Salisbury on the Saturday evening (mate only flies in at 3pm), then weymouth Exeter then well see from there on the Monday before heading home again....

Was thinking of the continent, but it's a bit short for ferries and things!

    Thanks for the infos!

  14. Greg Pullen - the guy that produces Benzina magazine, has some good rides on his website. He's based near Salisbury, might be worth a look.
