Did high oil consumption ever lead to anything significant other than having to top the thing up? I'm having to keep an eye on it constantly, it's not smoking or leaking so fuck knows where it's actually going. I'm not that concerned about having to top it up and it' significantly cheaper than having to trade it in for something else. 1260S 7000 miles, runs perfectly, goes like stink, love it, but it does like a drink.
I asked the same question a while back and was told that on long motorway trips it'll drink. I did several thousand km's over a week recently and had to top up once. Do you by chance have the full termi?
No termi on mine, totally standard. I’ve just done a weekend in Scotland with a mixture if relaxed touring and balls-out dog fighting. Top level mark to bottom level mark.
Last year on the Multi V4 I did a trip to Spain, through France. A lot of motorway miles. My oil went from top line to below bottom after 2500 trip. Since then it has remained stable with little motorway runs taken. I had the 9000 service completed last month. They over filled the oil by al litre , didnt take the air filter out to clean it or remove rear axle to grease as per the schedule. Took it back , not to pleased. They redid the oil and changed the air filter as a courtesy . The oil was still overfilled, so I removed 200mm myself. Checking the oil on the V4 is by warming the engine and letting it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, not rocket science.
I think it is one of those engines that drains down slowly as my cold level increases a surprising amount when left a week between rides. It needs to be checked fully warm then 15 mins after engine off as per the V4 procedure. (i did just go and look that up). If there is no white smoke, no strange noises, and no pools under the bike then don't worry and see how it goes over the season and report back.
Mine will drink 0.5 to 1 litre on a trip. Almost 20,000 miles in and it's the same. Aside from when it had a oil leak from behind the cam drive pulley, it drank even more then (Italy trip below). I now take a 1 litre bottle with me having had no option but to buy Ducati branded oil in Italy, 2 litres as I had used most of one of my wiser Multistrada traveling companions spare litre on the way there... wasn't by any means reasonably priced
Good to know. I guess my question really is “does it get any worse? Does high oil consumption lead to any other problems?” I’m happy to keep the bike and just keep feeding it.
My 1299 used to drink. spent a few days in Germany and running it flat in 6th a few times. Stopped drinking after that.
Complaints to dealers about the issue ilicited responses along the lines that something like 500ml in 1,000 miles is acceptable. They won't do anything unless it's worse than that. Not what someone who's used to other marques that don't use a drop wants to hear. Though I've just given up worrying about it, doesn't seem to be getting worse. Last year's trip to Corsica was about 2,500 miles and I used the majority of the spare litre I had in the top box. Also have a mini silicon funnel that I bought in a truck stop that's perfect for these top ups. It convienently concertinas flat when not in use.
Sounds similar. Thing is I’ve had another mutley and also own two other dukes, none of which use a drop, this is the first.
Just what others on here have said. My 1260 used to drink when it was motorway miles. I just took a 1l top up with me and that would see me through even the longest trips. Was also told by the dealer than half a litre every 1000 miles is "ok". It never did get worse and the bike was faultless so it's just a character trait I suppose. So I wouldn't worry about it, just bring a top up bottle for longer trips.
My 2013 Twin spark didn't use a drop until about 11,000 miles then it started using oil, about 0.7 litre per thousand if I remember correctly. My dealer went in to bat for me and, under warranty, got a new set of pistons and barrels. After that it reverted to no oil use. I now have a 2015 DVT, bought second hand at 3000 miles, and it used oil from the off. About a liter per thousand miles. That varies and, I think, increases with motorway ridding, though I got back last Thursday from 10 days fantastic ridding in Northern Spain - 1850 miles, very little motorway but lots and lots of 2nd/3rd gear and 1.1/2 litres consumed. I don't think anything changes much over time - if you have an oil drinker it remains pretty constant and nothing bad happens if you keep it topped up. I did research what could be done some time ago when it was still under warranty, and Ducati won't do anything if consumption is constant, only if it changes rapidly as my Twin Spark did.
I have a full termi on my 1260 23000 miles and it’s always burnt oil , Exhaust gets sutted up quite quickly. Mine uses 1 litre per 2500 mile trip.
I totally get this, she's been sitting in the garage for over a week and the oil level has indeed crept up the sight glass a few mm's. I did check it a couple of days after the last run and it's definitely changed level.
1200 DVT - 4500-mile trip through the Alps, with a couple of long motorway/Autobahn days. 1.5 litres of oil used roughly 300ml per 1,000 miles I was told by a Ducati Tech that it blows past the rings at low RPM. Keep the revs up, and stay off the motorways at minimum throttle. Annoying ... but it is what it is.
