Help! Vin Incorrect On V5c

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Shorty4045, May 12, 2023.

  1. Does anyone have any advice on how to go about correcting an incorrect VIN shown on V5c?

I’ve owned the bike from new (‘98 916) and never noticed until today when attempting to get a letter of homologation from Ducati.

It’s been MOT’d every year and VIN on certificate matches V5c rather than what’s stamped on the headstock

The V5 has a couple of additional letters entered in the middle. VIN on headstock shows ZDM916S*01xxxx* and V5c has ZDM916SWB-01xxxx

Gov.uk doesn’t list incorrect VIN as a possibility for correction!

On a separate note my 2016 Panigale r is listed as ‘Black’ on its V5c but I think that’s a simple fix to correct to ‘Red’

    Any help much appreciated!

    Mike

  2. I had very similar issues on my 749R.
V5C number was different to number on the bike.
I contacted DVLA with photos etc and extract of delivery logbook (Ducati service record) to show it must be a typo on V5C.
Eventually, they issued a new correct V5C.

  3. Thank you RickyX
    I shall do the same
The lady at Ducati U.K. warned me that the outcome from DVLA can be unpredictable and somewhat depends on the individual dealing with the request since they also have to deal with people making fraudulent changes!

  4. I made the above edit based on personal experience. If you get a one of the former hang up and call back later -repeat until you have a conversation with one of the latter...

  5. The reason that this was noticed was due to a change in MOT testing rules -the tester now needs to input the number read off the vehicle rather than that shown on the V5C. Previous MOTs had input the V5C number which brought up the correct vehicle - even though incorrect per headstock. When my tester put in the number off the bike it basically said “computer says no, vehicle doesn’t exist”.
There’s an option on DVLA website to allow one to make an enquiry regarding this type of issue.
I didn’t need to have the bike inspected to get the change made as they accepted my logical and diplomatically worded emails and photographs that I provided.

By the way - all dealings were with a woman…welcome to the new world @Jez900ie !!

  6. Interesting posts. The information on the link @RickyX posted isn't very helpful... Section 1 on the new-style document is just the Keepers name and address! So where do you enter the correct frame number - just write it in Vehicle Details? If you send in say, a photo of the frame number and a copy of the sales invoice from the dealer you purchased the bike from would that do the trick?

I don't understand the bit about the MoT - I had my bike tested a couple of weeks or so ago and there were no issues.

    How to update your V5C
Fill in section 1 if you have a new style log book with multi-coloured numbered blocks on the front cover. Fill in section 7 if you have the older style log book.

Send it to DVLA with any necessary evidence.

If the change is not listed in section 1 or 7, add notes to the ‘vehicle details’ section instead. Send it to DVLA with evidence and a letter explaining the change.

  7. Clearly an improving situation! I've adjusted my post to reflect this new fangled modern era.

  8. Perhaps my quick link was not 100% correct however, the gist was: get in contact with them, be polite, provide evidence.

  9. By way of an update I sent of my incorrect V5 with corrections to the VIN and included photos of headstock and front page of original service book, both showing the correct VIN and my name as original owner and received corrected V5 about 5 weeks later. No questions asked. Good service in my opinion and can’t believe I never noticed it was wrong all this time

  10. That’s good to know, I’ve sent mine off about 4 weeks ago and was beginning to wonder what’s going on. Hopefully I’ll get them next week ‍♂️
