I want to upgrade the calipers and discs on my 749. The bike which was originally a biposto has been heavily modified with most parts already being swapped out for 749 R equivalents including the forks. I've also already upgraded the master cylinder to a Brembo RCS 19 Corsa unit. I use the bike for track days only but operate a day time only MOT which allows me to ride it to and from the track so it gets very limited road use. I'm after ideas for upgrading the discs and calipers. My local Ducati dealer has tried to talk me out of SICOM DMC Dual Matrix Composite Ceramic T-Drive discs and I can't quite understand why. If they are genuinely a bad idea for combined track / road use I was thinking of going with Brembo Racing HPK T-Drive which seem to be the gold standard for track use. I'm totally confused by the number of options when it comes to calipers. My dealer has recommended Brembo Stylema. Any advice would be much appreciated. I'm after something that is appropriate in terms of my riding abailities (intermediate) and makes sense on the bike i.e. I don't seem much sense on putting MotoGP quality parts on a 749. I guess I should mentioned that I don't have any real budget constraints but want to keep it sensible.
ive got brembo hpk discs up front and brembo 07BB33RC pads - very happy and a significant step up from the standard set-up ive fairly modified 2006 dark track hack
im new to TDs and in the novice group but i have a 'spirited' riding style (when i can stay on the bike)
Did you go with the Supersport or T-Drive discs? I prefer the look of the Supersport but am told the T-drive is a superior product.
can you send me more info on both? i didnt realise there were 2 options but can check against my discs later
I personally think the P4 Calipers are okay. I'd get a pukka Brembo RCS 17 (a 19 would probably give too much of a harsh feel), and some really good Brembo Serie Oro thick discs, and SBS dual Carbon pads or Race Sinter (as Z04's are amazing but you need to be a millionaire) then I think you'll be on the money. I recently did Snetterton on a 98 RSV Mille, I had the old Brembo gold lines, new braided lines, SBS pads and EBC Discs and it was pretty good braking wise, I was lapping nearly fast group pace on it. So with the set up mentioned above brakes won't be your issue.
I don't want to throw money at the bike for no reason but I was planning on parts that are considerably more expesnive but perhaps that's not necessary?
sorry just noticed you already have Radial mount brembo's not P4's. Honestly if you are still struggling for brake power and longevity there is something wrong. The calipers on there are the same Brembo's as the Gen 3 BMW S1000rr and those calipers are literally 1 finger braking on track. I would definitely go Brembo discs and pads, and make sure you have a radial master cylinder designed to match the calipers, and you will have brakes as good as almost anything out there.
That’s great advice and very helpful. I’m not in need of more braking power as far as I know but it does begs the question why are there so many calipers from the GP4-RR all the way down to what I have which came stock on the 749?
I think you are trying to say there are expensive calipers etc? I mean there is more than just braking power, things like weight, so the GP4R has versions that are made of nickel, and some have titanium pistons etc. At that sort of range though you are looking at calipers that make 0.1second difference so the only reason you'd pay out for stuff like that is for bragging rights. I've just bought a new bike, it has Stylema's on it and the brakes are awesome, but honestly they are still considered an 'OEM brembo'.
You’re absolutely right - I guess I want someone to tell me to spend more and more exotic parts even though I’m not going to get any benefit from them other than falling in love each time I look at them
Oh... sorry, yeah, you need nickel coated Brembo's, and while you are there you need some Ohlins FGR forks ;-)
Running in Inters, all your suggestions are massive overkill, just be honest and admit its for aesthetics and because 'you can' .... the benefits are negligible if any. I did over 100 trackdays on my 999R on standard set up and they had no issues slowing me down, no fade issues, no modulation issues etc etc .... @RickyX what you running brakes wise ? `You're no slouch ....
Not the best photo, but single line from master cylinder to right calliper and “T” off that line by the lower triple clamp to left calliper. As opposed to two lines off the MC, one to each calliper or a single line off the MC to the right calliper and a further line from the right to the left calliper.
