I’m purchasing a second hand exhaust for my car from a seller on the M2 owners page on Facebook, the seller has been quite a regular poster on the owners page for the last 18 months, and looks to be trustworthy He’s based in Glasgow, I’m in south wales, so the item needs to be shipped I’m paying over £1000 out on an item, so I’d be looking for some kind of buyer protection, I’ve looked on the PayPal website for info , but just getting confused How would I go about being eligible for buyer protection using PayPal ? Would the seller need to send me an invoice ? any help appreciated
Its all here https://www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mpp/ua/buyer-protection Essentially you are covered, but if you need to return for some reason as authorised by PayPal you pick up the tab for return costs.
I believe if you purchase through PayPal using business/trade option then you are protected, if you choose friends&family then you’re not? the thing to account for is if you are using an external fund to make the transaction (ie credit card) then the seller cops the credit card charge, by friends and family you cop the charges? Terms change all the time and tbh I don’t use PayPal much anymore so best check as above
Sort of. Using PayPal F&F option, there are no charges for either party BUT there's no protection to anyone. Clearly this avoids PayPal charges but really is for people that you know & trust!
There is no protection with friends and family Personal Payments Choose “Sending to a friend” for the everyday exchange of money between you and your friends and family. You can use personal payments when you send money as a gift, split a lunch bill, pay your share of living expenses, or something similar. Personal payments aren't covered by PayPal Purchase Protection. Purchases for Goods and Services Choose “Paying for an item or service” when buying goods or services. You can use this type of payment when you pay for an item you won in an auction, buy merchandise online, download a digital item, or something similar. We cover eligible goods and services payments under PayPal Purchase https://www.paypal.com/us/cshelp/ar...ype,payments under PayPal Purchase Protection.
https://www.paypal.com/us/webapps/m...nds,eligible purchases plus original shipping. Refunds If an order doesn’t arrive or it doesn’t match the description, we’ll reimburse the full cost of eligible purchases plus original shipping.
Fund your paypal purchase via a credit card too, as well as avoiding friends and family. Belt and braces approach.
Its always good to avoid buying anything from friends and family. as you can never complain afterwards, so you will always be cross!
The credit card thing and PayPal doesn’t always work depending on the item/service. I used my credit card to pay for a holiday home rental and they didn’t return the deposit despite chasing them multiple times. PayPal weren’t interested and the credit card company opened and then closed the dispute as they said they couldn’t uphold it. Luckily eventually I got it refunded by the letting company after shaming them on Twitter and Trustpilot
