Whats A Super Strong Contact Glue?

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by Jez900ie, May 25, 2023.

  1. As some of you may have noticed, I have been spending a lot of time (and even more money) buggering about with a catamaran refurb.

My latest issue is replacing the rubber anti-skid grips which are glued to the deck edge, so that when trapezing I will have some chance of avoiding falling overboard.

So my quest is does anyone know of a super strong, totally rugged glue, which will not destroy gelcoat or rubber? It will also need to be flexible and enjoy being immersed in water.

If so can you reply with the name of said adhesive and ideally where its available.

    Thanks all!

  2. Would you not be best asking at a Ship Chandler? - to get the exact right glue for the job? :upyeah:

  3. Yes and no... Unfortunately there are no chandlery places on the Cheshire Plain that I can find. My recent experience of them by 'phone has been happy, friendly staff who re read to you what it says in their online brochure. No actual product knowledge or experience using most of the gear they sell.

What I'm hoping for is some personal recommendations of products people have actually used themselves. A brilliant carpet glue that has performed super well in someone's bathroom would probably be a good bet. I'll combine that with a quick call to the maker to check that the adhesive won't dissolve gelcoat before purchasing as some industrial glues melt fibreglass/epoxy.

  4. There's summat called 'night sky radiation' where a metal garage roof for example can radiate heat into a clear night sky and become considerably colder than the ambient air temperature. This gives ideal conditions for horrendous condensation.

So the carpet underlay reduces the amount of heat radiation, puts a barrier between the cold roof & air and mops up any farty amount of condensation that might occur.

  5. Have a look at clear Stixall, it goes off even under water and remains flexible.
    Just a thought ?

  6. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.

After a lot of (fruitless) calls this morning to various well known purveyors of glues and adhesives I send a quick email to the ex Director of Warranty for Hobie Cat in Oceanside California. It was lunchtime by then and the Americans were awake, so I figured a quick email via the Hobie equivalent of our forum was worth a try...

Within fifteen minutes the good ol' boy wrote back saying that any contact glue will be more than sufficient and would allow for the anti skid to be removed/ replaced in some years if necessary. Thats what they use themselves!

So here it is stuck down and hardening in the sunshine for 24 hours.
