Decent French Hotel Recommendations

If you wait until later you will be dodging camper vans and minibuses towing canoes in the Tarn. We rode it early one morning and it was magical with almost no traffic

 

Blow me, I was right near you about 2 weeks ago. Next time I’m there I’ll look you up, although it probably won’t be for at least a year.

 

Did you ride there? How did you like our area?

I drove and I rode. I drove down from Amsterdam where my son lives and I rode around the area on an
e-bike. I had no idea Clochmerle actually existed, I presumed it was just fictional. I was visiting an old friend who lives in Blacé.

 

A yes, l’Auberge de Clochemerle is a nice restaurant. Vaux en Beaujolais is the name of the village. It’s about 15 miles east of us. How did you hear of it ?

 

Rocamadour is worth a visit. Very interesting place.

There is a decent place to stop not far away called Frenchretroride.

Rocamadour is absolutely amazing and very Holy…


If you look well, you may be able to find Durandal, the legendary sword of Sir Roland de Roncevaux. It is embedded in the rock, somewhere in the town.


Legend has it that when he was standing his final fight against the Saracens, in the Pyrénées, protecting his uncle king Charlemagne’s rear guard, in an attempt to destroy his holy sword to prevent it from falling into the ennemies hands, he hit the mountain so hard that he destroyed part of the mountain in Gavarnie. But Durandal was indestructible and with the blow, it bounced off his grip and flew many miles north across the country to finally land and bury itself deep in a rock. This feature was so impressive that believers decided to build a holy sanctuary where the sword had landed. It is known today as Rocamadour. The breach in the Pyrenees is still called « La brèche de Roland ».

We have a very remote house not so far from Rocamadour. One day at lunchtime a chap dressed as Jesus dragging a cross passed the field above us. We spoke and fed him. He was in his way to Santiago Di Compostela, apparently we are in a very ancient path, his next stop was Rocamadour. You had to be there to believe this.

 

Incredible place, Rocamadour, I was there a few years ago... I can perfectly believe the story, I wish I was there when it happened.

 

You are getting the weather too. A few isolated ‘orages’ but mostly on an evening anyway. Hot. But not as hot as it can get. I had 42degrees coming back from Millau to my place the other year. It was starting to get dangerous and I had picked the wrong (slow) roads for the extreme heat.
Sainte-Enimie is a nice place to stop for a break on the Tarn Gorge.

 

I dont think I have been on that one. It looks like a narrow one on streetview.
