1260 Front Sprocket Replacement Without Chain Split ?

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Speedie, Jun 6, 2023.

  1. Hi, I have been getting a sweat on trying to remove the front sprocket on my 1260S 2017 - Thought all was going too easy , Shaft nut off , chain slack and off rear sprocket, removed clutch slave and plastics around the area.
Could I get the chain to clear the nut ? No fookin chance ! It just seems to hit the engine casing in one place which stops it. Unless I can get it to clear all the teeth at the same time it is going nowhere and that’s where I’m at - without exerting too much force it just doesn’t want to clear.

any ideas other than buying a new soft link and spitting the chain ?

    Cheers in advance

    Mick

  2. There's a detailed thread on how to get it off, either here or on the US forum.
It was fairly recent. Do a search and you should find it

  3. In my experience, after having done all the things you mention (sprocket retainer removed, slack in the rear, clutch slave removed) the front sprocket should gently slide out with the chain still wrapped around it. You can take it off the chain once off the shaft. Same to put things back in.

  4. I’ve managed to do it on a few occasions. It’s hard to describe the method because I’m not entirely sure what I did!

@Guillaume69 is about spot on though, persevere, in my experience it normally comes off when you’re about to give up.

  5. Thanks guys - I left it for a day and then went back to it and sat trying all sorts and eventually it just about squeezed off . 14T being smaller has easily gone on and now I will be able to see what the difference is like

  7. 14t front sprocket, one of those incremental improvements I've made to my 1260 that are so worthwhile.

  8. I certainly did .
Changed to 14 teeth many years ago .... never going back again !

On the plus side , you get 7% more acceleration , and it's so much easier to drive in city traffic ,
with less of the constant gear changing .
OK .... so you lose a bit on the top speed , but I haven't gone flat-out since I was last in Germany ,
and that was fifteen years ago .

    Why 7% ?
It's just simple maths , innit ..... as such
    ..... :):grinning::laughing:

  9. Thanks for the above. Did the same process, 10 min coffee break, read this thread, went back to it and voila. This site is GREAT !

  10. Mick - It was really getting to point where I thought there was no chance but then just in one spot it gave me a glimmer that it might just come past what ever it was catching on . Took a bit of cajoling but after a while off it popped ! the new one went on really easy - just make sure you put it back on the right way round....

    Cheers

    Mick
