Thread is getting quite long and you must have missed : Fuel gets to the plugs. just no spark. I swapped back to the original ECU and checked the ECU earth wire - made no difference so swapped back to the termi ECU. I have added info and things tried to the OP
I see that he's getting fuel but for info the relay on the side of the battery feeds coils and injectors
Not sure this has been covered already but have you checked the cca rating of your battery? It really needs to be at least 210. Most of the less expensive ones are 150 which is not quite enough for the big Ducati twins. I had trouble starting my 999 which had a decent Motobatt on it but was only 150cca. Changed to a Yuasa 12B-BS. Now starts on the button. Had same issue with the S4 Monster I just bought.
Long shot I know but I had a 1098s that was a 'mare to start and eat batteries After trying various things ( coils , reg reg, batteries) it turned out the solenoid contacts had internally corroded. not enough to stop the starter turning the motor over healthily, but enough to suck the life out the electrical system. When I Bridged the solenoid it started in a second.
this is so true, and I had overlooked this. Used to happen on 50's/60's Lancias/Ferraris etc and luckily these could be totally stripped down revealing the problem.
i've talked about the faulty starter motor that caused a non start despite spinning the engine at a v,good rate before. hence we need to know if it starts with a bump. or, by spinning up the engine by hand with the plugs out. it also stank of fuel during cranking. diagnosing mine i had bypassed everything using a lump of a battery direct to the starter and still no spark. despite what appeared to be a healthy starter, it was drawing that much power it was switching off the ECU coil drivers.
Just buy a new CPS and fit it. You don’t need to get one from Ducati, they’re generic parts just make sure it has; a) it has the same fixing ie 1 hole or 2 b) the sensor itself is the same dimensions ie length and diameter c) the connector to the loom is the same Google & eBay/Amazon should come up with one for a fraction of the cost of the part from Ducati. Diagnostics throws an error when the cps is disconnected from the loom but may not always throw an error when the sensor is failing or has failed. For the sake of what is a low value item <€50 and a few minutes of your time it’s worth changing it to either rule it out or cure the issue. edit : Ducati p/No is 55241321A a quick check on eBay throws up several suppliers offering that part. I wouldn’t worry they’re made in China, they all are these days and it’s nothing more than a simple magnet encased in a plastic surrrond.
Good luck with trying to bump start a 1098. Tried it on mine many years ago down a steep hill in third gear and it just locked up the back wheel at 20mph.
remove the plugs and spin the rear wheel up by hand. two man job but easy peasy. the oil light thing tho. a wiring diag would be v,helpfull.
Thanks for taking the time to look into that. Apparently if the CPS has failed it won't register any RPMs when cranking. - the needle/digital display would stay at 0. Mine does display one to two bars when cranking. That being said there is a used one I could from a breakers - its the C revision 55241321C from what I can tell it's just a newer version of the same part.
Afaik A B & C variants are all the same, just sourced from different suppliers over the years hence the final letter change whilst the part number remains constant. As for it being a used version, I’d ignore it and go for a new part. There’s no guarantee a used one works and even if it does or could put you in the same position ie fail in short order. On a previous bike (ST2) I rode it one day it was fine, no issues at all, the next weekend it wouldn’t start at all . After much much testing I realised there was no spark. It was working fine, it had been ridden into the garage, hadn’t been touched for 6 days now wouldn’t start. @Derek suggested the CPS. I bought one and changed it and it fired up straight away . How could that be? One day it’s fine the next day not and nothing’s happened inbetween. They just fail with age, heat cycles, vibration. For the sake of €30 or so I’d buy one and try it. Could save a big bill at the dealers.
I had a cps failure on my 750ss ie. It would go 3 miles, cut out, backfire then not start up at all. If you left it a few mins it would start and run for a mile or 2. Swapped for new fiat cps - all was fine after.
Diag software didn't flag up and error for my faulty cps when it was fitted. I think it was about £25 for fiat 1 mounting hole sensor. If cps weren't working I wouldn't expect injectors to work / squirt into cylinder. Did u have matching key / dash / ecu for "spare" setup cos of immobiliser?
Thanks for all the comments regarding CPS and the offer if local I've ordered one, should be here in 2 days. I hope it's the CPS even though the indipendent Ducati service center I spoke to stated it wouldn't register any rpms if it's faulty ... But mine does
